Niagara College will continue to expand its faculty training this summer by welcoming 15 educators from Indonesia looking to enhance their travel management and tourism expertise, July 24 to August 30.
This opportunity is made possible through a Retooling Scholarship program for lecturers of vocational higher education offered by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (MORTHE) for the Republic of Indonesia.
“The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport is excited to be completing this project on behalf of Indonesia’s Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. It’s an example of the high quality education that our students get every day from our world class educators,” said Damian Goulborne, associate dean of NC’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport. “We hope to expand our collaborations with Indonesia as our faculty would like to learn their tourism best practices in hospitality operations, particularly from the Bali region, so we can pass it on to our students and employers.”
This customized Travel Management program offered by the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport will be supported by the International Division. Six-weeks in length, the program is designed to provide lecturers with innovative and practical learning that will help build their existing competency in the field of hospitality innovation. The Retooling Scholarship program will also engage service and local tourism partners of the College and allow the lecturers to apply learning concepts and other skills by developing practical and relevant industry solutions which will deepen their understanding of the NC best practices in the tourism industry.
Participant, Abdullah Helmy of the MORTHE for the Republic of Indonesia’s expert team for Revitalization of Vocational Higher Education, spoke to how lecturers from across the country were selected through a proposal process where interested applicants were asked to identify their personal goals, institutional targets and a clear objective.
“The hope is that the knowledge learned during the Retooling Scholarship program at Niagara College can be customized and implemented at the educators’ home institutions in Indonesia and have a real impact on students across the country,” shared Helmy. “The lessons learned at Niagara College impact the lecturers, but also their respective institutions and both current and future students in Indonesia.”
In addition to learning more about their specific discipline, the educators will further develop their cultural intelligence, which is an especially powerful skillset in travel management.
