The July 18 editions of The Welland Tribune, The St. Catharines Standard, and The Niagara Falls Review included a story on the success of the Niagara College Teaching Winery at the U.S. Open Beer Championship on July 9.
NC’s Beer 101 Strong Ale took the bronze medal in the old ale/strong ale category. The 7.5% Scottish ale first brewed at the college as a version of its teaching brewery’s multiple-award-winning Christmas beer, Rudolph’s Red Nose Ale. Since 2013, it has received numerous accolades in different competitions.
The article features quotes from Jon Downing and Steve Gil on the success of this student-crafted beer. Dow Scoggins, director of the U.S. Open Beer, College and Cider Championship, gave credit to NC’s students who he says, “have consistently medalled at this competition — a pretty amazing feat considering they are competing with some of the world’s best brewers.”
