The Welland Tribune: Gretzky Estates taps into beer market with help from Niagara College

On June 10, The Welland Tribune reported on the NC connection to the new release from Wayne Gretzky Estates –  No. 99 Rye Lager – early trials of which were brewed at NC’s Teaching Brewery by staff and students in the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program. Using the recipe crafted by Master brewer and distiller for Gretzky’s, Joshua Beach, Brewmaster students helped Beach create a good, consistent product for market.

Beach had just nine months to turnaround his craft brew, and looking to the college for help. During a visit to the Teaching Brewery following the release of the new brew, Beach said, “Having all that skilled, professional labour was invaluable,” said Beach, adding the fact the college and Gretzky Estates are located nearby helped too.

At the time, the project could not be discussed with students because of a nondisclosure agreement between NC and Wayne Gretzky Estates. When Beach came to the Teaching Brewery to monitor his trials, NC’s John Downing didn’t introduce who he was or where he was from.
