Tom Price has beccome the new president of NCSAC.
The 2019-2020 board of directors for the NC Student Administrative Council was introduced at the annual Night of Excellence awards on April 11. Campaigning and elections for the new NCSAC board of directors was held March 2019.
Price believes his age, employment experience, education, and volunteering have equipped him with the expertise and insight experience necessary to set him apart.
“I believe that my three years of on-campus involvement at Niagara College have fostered respectful and trustworthy relationships with fellow students, faculty, and administrators and will set me apart,” said Price. “I hope that my team and I provide the necessary support and services to ensure student success.
“In the future, I see enhanced collaborations and improved partnerships with all departments in the College, a sincere inclusivity with all students, and an organization that embodies the spirit of student life.”
Before coming to NC, Price worked as a nuclear code welder in Niagara’s manufacturing industry for 10 years, in addition to two decades in the hospitality sector, holding diverse positions from a concierge to a banquet supervisor.
Price completed the Business Administration Human Resources advanced diploma program (three years) at NC with honours standing. Early in his program, Price took on key leadership roles on College boards and committees, serving as a student representative for NCSAC, and a member of the Niagara College Libraries Student Advisory Team.
Price was NCSAC’s director of Goodwill during his second year. His portfolio included the Rise and Shine Breakfast program, Nourishing Minds, food and toy drives, and the NCSAC Street Team. He also served as an NC Expert, giving comprehensive campus tours to prospective students and influencers.
During his third year of studies, Price returned to NCSAC as a board member, and the Niagara College Board of Governors as a student representative. He also moderated discussion panels for the Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership, and Career Services.
Price has been awarded for his leadership and student engagement. He was the recipient of the First-Generation Leadership and Engagement Award, the Niagara College Libraries Departmental Leadership and Engagement Award, the Recruitment Departmental Leadership and Engagement Award, and the SAC Peer Award.
Price was a part-time student in winter 2016, when he decided to enroll as a full-time student in the Human Resources program.
“The passion that faculty, support staff, and administrators have for student success, the experiential and applied learning, the diverse and inclusive on campus engagement, and the trailblazing spirit are what made Niagara College stand out from the other colleges in Ontario,” he said.
Price realized his passion was advocating for students, and recognized there was no better opportunity to do just that than as the NCSAC president. He decided to run for the position, presented his campaign to the board, resulting in a vote of confidence.
“I felt a sense of accomplishment and contentment having won the election,” he said.
The year ahead
Price anticipates that this year will bring unprecedented changes to student associations and colleges across Ontario due to the redesign of OSAP and the implementation of a student choice initiative. He plans to skillfully navigate these changes, leading the new NCSAC team and working together with the talented group.
“I want to promote and ensure heightened education of all student supports and services, enhanced mental health support, greater transit, and a student centre,” said Price. “Additionally, I want to focus on NCSAC corporate accountability, and fiscal responsibility.”
“As the president it will be my responsibility to solidify the NC SAC board and governance model restructuring.”
