The Annual Night of Excellence, a joint event by the Student Administrative Council and the Centre for Student Engagement and Leadership, was held on Thursday, April 11, 2019.
The annual Educator of the Year awards are presented to one full-time and one part-time faculty member after students nominate an instructor they feel has gone above and beyond or has made a significant contribution to their education.
Professor Peter “Dutch” VandenBerg was named the full-time Educator of the Award recipient, while Professor Stephen Carroll bagged the part-time Educator of the Year Award.

VandenBerg is a star among his students, who say he takes great pride in being the best professor he possibly can, because he genuinely cares for the students’ wellbeing and education.
VandenBerg, professor and co-ordinator for the Broadcasting, Radio, Television & Film program, says he is overwhelmed and touched by the love his students have shown by nominating him.
“I am humbled by the fact these students took time out of their busy lives to write such incredible words about how I have touched their lives,” said VandenBerg. “The reality is they make a huge difference in my life – they inspire me and make me a better person.”
Carroll, a part-time professor with the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Sport, is a favourite among his students who say he is understanding and helpful to students. “He’s not just a good teacher, he’s a great human being as well.”
