Niagara College’s community spirit emerges each spring for the annual Rankin Cancer Run, and I hope you’ll take part this year on May 25.

Year over year, it makes me proud to see so many staff, faculty, administrators, students and retirees come out to represent our College at this touching fundraiser, one which resonates with so many people in the Niagara region. In 2018, more than 80 individuals from NC participated.

The Rankin Run has made a difference in the lives of those in our community, raising funds for cancer support in Niagara. I’d like to recognize the important work of unpaid volunteers who give of their time to organize the run/walk without receiving a salary. Their efforts not only raise funds but build a community of people who support one another and provide strength in the battle against cancer.

This year, Saundra and I are especially proud to be part of the promotion on the 2019 poster. This event and cause is near and dear to us and we see the impact it has on immediate cancer care in Niagara. We hope you will be inspired by the message, “from care comes courage,” and the role we can all play to make a difference.

Over the past 13 years, the Rankin Cancer Run has raised more than $8.7 million to support those with cancer in Niagara. Last year, Niagara College was among over 265 teams participating in the fundraiser – 56 schools – which raised $1,165,000 for the Niagara community:

  • $600,000 to Walker Family Cancer Centre;
  • $200,000 to Wellspring Niagara;
  • $100,000 to Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital;
  • $50,000 to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby;
  • $50,000  to Greater Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls;
  • $50,000  to Welland General Hospital;
  • $50,000  to Port Colborne Hospital;
  • $50,000 to Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie; and
  • $15,000 to Hospice Niagara.

Again in 2019, the NC community has an opportunity to join together to make a difference on the 14th anniversary of the Rankin Cancer Run. I’d like to inspire our College community to continue our tradition of supporting our community by joining the College team. Bring your family and friends – strollers, wheelchairs and leashed dogs are welcome.

This year’s run will be held on May 25 (beginning at 10 a.m.), beginning on Niagara Street in St. Catharines, at Parnell. Participants can opt for a 1-km or 5-km route that takes place in the Port Weller area of St. Catharines.

Niagara College will have a tent on site as a gathering place. Free food will be provided after the run along with entertainment and activities. So many schools and clubs bring tents and banners for their teams and I encourage participants to show their NC pride!

Those interested in joining Niagara College’s team are asked to register by May 1 to ensure they are part of the College’s t-shirt order.  Fees are $20 for adults and $10 for students (includes a free t-shirt).

To register, please visit the College’s Rankin Run Team website here.

Those who are unable to run or walk on May 25 may still get involved by sponsoring the NC team. To donate, visit the team’s website here, and click the ‘Sponsor Us’ tab for details.
