60 Dental Assisting students took to the Welland Campus Applied Health foyer to teach the NC community about oral health.

Flossing has never looked so fun… until now.

NC’s Dental Assisting (DA) program celebrating Dental Assistant Recognition Week with a fun-filled afternoon on March 13, complete with a photo booth, toonie toss and free giveaways.

DA student Emily Kelly handed out prizes and giveaways to help fellow students keep their smiles sparkling.

Leading as NC’s largest DA class yet, 60 students presented poster boards in the Welland Campus Applied Health Institute foyer on topics ranging from daily oral care for the busy student to the advantages and drawbacks of a manual versus electric toothbrush.

“The event was a success because it brought oral health education to the forefront for the day,” said Jennifer Karnay, placement coordinator and part-time faculty member for the College’s Dental programs. “We all learned so much while having fun at the same time.”

Karnay approximates the DA students connected with 400-500 NC students, distributed hundreds of prizes and giveaways through interactive games and also raised $250 for ALS with a Toonie toss where the winner received a  Genius Electric Toothbrush donated by Oral B.

Not only did the NC community brush up on some critical oral health knowledge, this different presentation format offered a new learning opportunity for the DA students.

“At an event like this you have to be prepared to answer the public’s questions and be able to interact and draw people out, this is something you can’t learn in a lecture,” said DA student Maggie Huibers. “I found it was beneficial to also learn what questions people have about oral health because that is something that I can remember and take into practice with me once I am done school.”

Rozzy Casa Rodriguez, Sweta Varia, Sydney Howard, Lisa Woolhead, Jordan Elgie, and Carly Drake commemorate this year’s Dental Assistant Recognition Week celebration with a fun picture at the DA photo booth.

Taking place over the first full week of March, Dental Assistant Recognition Week was designated by the Canadian Dental Association, Canadian Dental Assistants’ Association, American Dental Assistants Association, and the American Dental Association to recognize the versatile, multitalented dental assistants across North America.
