As the Earth thaws, an entire ecosystem comes to life.

As spring approaches, NC Sustainability encourages students, staff and the community to get involved in environmental initiatives. Practice sustainability on campus, in your city or on a global scale by participating in one of NC Sustainability’s many events.

“Spring is almost here and the campuses are starting to come back to life in more ways than one. The wildlife will be starting to return to the area, the trees and plants will be getting ready to bloom, and the students and staff will be wanting to get outside to enjoy it all,” said Amber Schmucker, sustainability program and outreach coordinator.

Designing Change for a Living Planet

The World Wildlife Fund is encouraging postsecondary students across Ontario to propose their one-of-a-kind ideas for a sustainable future at the WWF Toronto office on March 16. Four students, selected by the College from a pool of applicants, will represent NC in a competition for $1,200 and a one-on-one mentoring opportunity with an industry professional in a sector area of their choice. Twelve teams will present their vision for a more sustainable planet in front of WWF staff and a panel of expert judges.

Earth Hour Trivia

Staff and students are invited to the first annual Earth Hour Trivia on March 28 from 7-9 p.m. Hosted in the NOTL campus Armoury, participants will be challenged with environmentally focused questions for a chance to win prizes. This evening of fun is $10 per team of six to eight members. Not only will participants enjoy a night of trivia, they will also be partaking in a global energy conservation movement.

Winter Hiking Series at Niagara Glen

In the next edition of NC Sustainability’s Winter Hiking Series, staff, students and the community are encouraged to explore the wonders of winter with a one-and-a-half- to two- hour guided hike on March 30. Suitable for all hiking levels, this hike will begin at 9 a.m. at Niagara Glen. Participants are encouraged to dress in layers and wear weather appropriate clothing including comfortable shoes, hats, and mittens.

The hike location is subject to change. RSVP for the hike and stay up-to-date on location information at the Get Involved Portal. RSVP is not required.

Spring BioBlitz

A BioBlitz is a community approach to identifying as many plant and animal species on a property, over a specified period of time. NC is hosting its fourth annual Spring BioBlitz on Saturday, April 13 , from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. Students, staff and community residents are invited to this free event and help collect information that can inform our species inventory of the campus. Come for the hour or stay for the day. The goal is to collect species information to better understand all of the organisms living on campus and to monitor how biodiversity is changing over time.

Sign up on Eventbrite.ca. Registration will be located in the NC Greenhouse starting at 6 a.m. on April 13.
