Mood walks are back to help you melt that stress away this winter!
Mood Walks, which were launched last year at NC, continue at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses every Wednesday – snow or shine.
Geared to both staff and students, the 50-minute Mood Walks for Campus Mental Health are part of a province-wide initiative led by the Canadian Mental Health Association, designed to promote physical activity in nature, and to improve physical and mental health.
“People are choosing to join the group for exercise, increased exposure to the outdoors, a chance to meet others, and clear their thoughts,” said Carolyn Triemstra, dean of the College’s Community and Health Studies division. “We hope that the NC community continues to access the mood walks and enjoy the inherent benefits of the outdoor walk.”
At the Welland Campus, Mood Walks will depart from the AHI front entrance at 11:30 a.m. and head to Chippawa Park for a calming stroll.
At the NOTL Campus, Mood Walks will depart from the info centre entrance at 1:30 p.m. Planned routes include the Wet Land Ridge and the Bass Pro Shop aquarium.
Advance registration is not required – just meet the group at the indicated place of departure for each campus.
Mood Walks offer a unique opportunity for participants to meet new people while experiencing the proven health benefits of spending time in nature.
In addition, as the result of a Career Ready Fund grant received by her division, NC Recreation Therapy program graduate Julia Tamburri was hired to lead the weekly Mood Walks.
“If you aren’t into the gym, then this is a chance to get a little exercise in, while at school,” said Tamburri. “Being outside and in nature significantly reduces stress, and we all know how stressful being a student can be.”
