The next edition of the College's popular Project Brew is coming to the St. Catharines Market Square on Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. Winter is Brewing will feature 18 chill-banishing beers created by fourth semester Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management students. The event, held each semester, is an opportunity for the public to sample unique, locally developed and often experimental small batch beers from the College's Teaching Brewery, while graduating students showcase what they have learned. The evening will also feature, music, food vendors, and more. This semester's theme, Winter is Brewing, has energized the students to create some one-of-a-kind holiday-inspired beers, like Michelle Verge's Cedar Aged West Coast IPA, or Nicholas Jakubowski's Sugar Plum Fairy - an amber spiced plum ale, made with traditional German lebkuchengewürz spices and aged on Niagara plums. "Project Brew really exemplifies the depth of experience students receive in the program," said faculty advisor April Tyrrell. "It's a unique opportunity for them to demonstrate the skills they've learned not only creating unique beer, but also planning and executing a large-scale community event." Student beers will be judged on site and Praxair, one of the event sponsors, will award a $4,500 scholarship to the graduating student who creates the winning beer. Tickets for Project Brew: Winter is Brewing are $20 in advance (online) or $25 at the door (limited; must be 19 years of age or older with valid photo ID). Admission includes a commemorative sample glass and four drink tokens. Proceeds from Project Brew support the Matt Soos Memorial Fund, which awards a scholarship each year to the student who brews the best beer at the College's August Brewmaster Competition.
