Cue the caffeine and get ready to turn up the heat!
A group of Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film students are ready to pull an all-nighter to help others in the community through this year’s Rock Around the Clock 24-hour radiothon.
The live broadcast on College radio station CRNC The Heat will begin on November 29 at noon and will continue until November 30 at noon. Students will be stationed near the ‘Shark Tank’ at the Welland Campus – in the Simcoe foyer, near International. They will be collecting cash donations for the NC Student Administrative Council’s Nourishing Minds program, which provides grocery gift cards to students in need, as well as food donations for the Welland Food Bank.
“Rock Around The Clock is an opportunity for BRTF students to fundraise for the Nourishing Minds program in a way that radio stations raise money and awareness in the real world,” said Bruce Gilbert, BRTF coordinator and presentation professor. “The 24-hour commitment has become a real bonding opportunity for incoming and outgoing CRNC.ca department heads too.”
“It will definitely be rewarding helping out the community – especially helping the community doing something that we all love: radio,” said Sara Meshmesh, third-year BRTF student who is CRNC’s program director and is responsible for organizing and coordinating the show hours for the event.
Meshmesh noted that they will be asking students to donate their loonies and toonies during Rock Around the Clock this year.
“We know a lot of students can’t afford a big donation,” she said. “We don’t want to set a specific goal – we just want to help as many students as we can.”
Students will be filling the 24-hour broadcast with various specialty shows, including sports shows, a Disney hour, as well as various genres of music. Meshmesh noted she is encouraging participants to bring snacks to help them power through the full 24 hours of the broadcast.
“Staying up all night will definitely be a challenge – but will be more fun than hard,” she said.
