On Oct. 25, Ontario Treasury Board President the Hon. Peter Bethlenfalvy paid a visit to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus to experience the world-class applied research and experiential learning opportunities NC students receive.
During his visit, Minister Bethlenfalvy met students and staff in NC’s Research and Innovation division, who shared some of the cutting-edge projects and technologies that have not only put NC on the map as one of the world’s leading research colleges, but also have also provided real-world benefits to businesses and industries across the province.

Rachel Gerroir, CFWI Innovation Centre Research Assistant and Culinary Innovation and Food Technology Student, demonstrated how NC is pushing the boundaries of beverage innovation through projects like the launch of Reinhart’s Red Apple Light Cider. Alex Davis, Software Developer and Research Associate showed off a project that researched how remote sensing and software can be used by SME manufacturers to monitor equipment health in real-time, while research assistant Brock Husak, and showed the minister how to use a hand-held 3D scanner, which allows the user to scan an object and recreate it with immense accuracy.

Following the research display, Minister Bethlenfalvy took in some of the unique, experiential learning enabled by Niagara College’s learning enterprises, as he toured the Teaching Brewery. There he met with CFWI dean Craig Youdale and brewmaster professor Adrian Popowycz to talk about the College’s unique Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program, which boasts a 100 per cent employment rate. Bethlenfalvy also met grad Mark Horsley and Ken Ting, from Bench Brewing Company, who shared why NC’s unique blend of hands-on, on-the-job education is so critical to the growth and health of Ontario’s burgeoning craft brewing industry.
