A new wellness activity centre is opening its doors at the Welland Campus to help keep students on track when it comes to their optimal well being.

Located in the Merritt Wing in M102, the Niagara College Therapeutic Recreation Activity Centre -known simply as ‘NC TRAC’ – offers students meaningful resources and therapeutic recreation activities to promote physical, social, cognitive, spiritual and emotional health. In addition to offering registered programs and special events, the centre is also a place where students can drop in for guided relaxation and meditation, cultural programs, or just to break away from academics, and enjoy their leisure time in stress-free, welcoming and inclusive setting.

Incorporating strategies from the field of Recreation Therapy, NC TRAC is also home to a snoezelen room – designed to deliver stimuli to various senses – virtual reality head sets and more.

“NC TRAC is a wonderful new addition to our College, bringing valuable evidence-based therapeutic recreation activities and resources – along with valuable expertise from our Recreation Therapy program – to our entire student body,” said Carolyn Triemstra, dean of NC’s Community and Health Studies division. “While it has a leisure focus, it will also benefit students in areas they may need help with, such as stress management and coping skills, socialization, or learning a new activity.”

Triemstra noted that the new Centre is supported by a grant received by her division from the province’s Career Ready Fund, focused on hiring graduates and increasing experiential learning opportunities for students. Four Recreation Therapy graduates have been hired to run activities at NC TRAC, working closely with faculty from the Therapeutic Recreation program, and there will be opportunities for student placements at the Centre as well.

The grant is helping to fund several new initiatives in the division, including the launch of weekly Mood Walks on Wednesdays at both the Welland and NOTL Campuses. View College launches weekly Mood Walks, beginning Oct. 3
