Goodbye mid-week blues!

The College is now hosting Mood Walks at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses on Wednesdays beginning October 3 – rain or shine.

Geared to both staff and students, the 50-minute Mood Walks for Campus Mental Health are part of a province-wide initiative led by the Canadian Mental Health Association, designed to promote physical activity in nature, and to improve physical and mental health.

“Mood Walks are for everyone – staff and students – and the idea is very simple: to give people a break from their everyday activity to help improve their mood and mental health, while enjoying the physical benefits of a short walk,” said Carolyn Triemstra, dean of the College’s Community and  Health Studies Division. “The walks are designed to be no more than 50 minutes to give people the one-hour time to break away.”

At the Welland Campus, Mood Walks will depart from the AHI front entrance at 10:30 a.m. planned routes include Woodlawn Park, Chippawa Park and campus trails.

At the NOTL Campus, Mood Walks will depart from the info centre entrance at 1:30 p.m.  Planned routes include the Wet Land Ridge, Bass Pro Shop aquarium, and the White Oaks Resort Grounds.

Advance registration is not required – just meet the group at the indicated place of departure for each campus.

Triemstra noted that her team worked with several different areas of the College to pave the way for the weekly Mood Walks.

In addition, as the result of a Career Ready Fund grant received by her division, NC Recreation Therapy program graduate Julia Tamburri was hired to lead the weekly Mood Walks.
