A procession of Nations was held as part of the Celebration of Nations on September 7.
Niagara College was a proud supporter of the recent Celebration of Nations: A Gathering of Indigenous Arts, Culture and Tradition which took place in St. Catharines.
Held from September 7 to 9 at the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, the Indigenous arts gathering celebrates creativity, diversity and resilience.
Student Services director Lianne Gagnon noted that the College strives to build a learning environment that is culturally inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of our learners, including Indigenous students. “Our participation in the Celebration of Nations provides an opportunity, not only for our First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students, but for all of our students to engage with the many Indigenous nations who are honoured at this inspiring multi-cultural event,” she said. “It is an example of the interactive, experiential learning that Niagara College is proud to offer.”
Representatives from the College, including president Dan Patterson, Student Services director Lianne Gagnon and staff from Indigenous Education, were among those from NC who participated in the Procession of Nations on Sept. 7.
“Celebration of Nations is one of many positive opportunities for the NC community to build strong relationships with the local Indigenous community in order to promote inclusivity within the Niagara region,” said NC counsellor Jamie Warren, from NC’s Indigenous Education department who attended the Procession of Nations.
The College’s Indigenous Education sponsored a workshop led by Chuck Commanda and Dr. Larry McDermott, which focused on the building of an Algonquin style birch bark canoe.
