Niagara College Hairstyling students got a chance to put their skills to use in support of pediatric cancer research earlier this month as part of the Niagara Regional Police Service’s Cops for Cancer head shave.
Cops For Cancer is a movement that began over 20 years ago in Western Canada, which has since raised millions of dollars across the country for pediatric cancer research. As part of the campaign, on Aug. 9, The NRPS hosted a head shave at Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, offering police officials and politicians the chance to lose their locks for the cause.

NC Hairstyling professor Kristy Weaver discovered the opportunity to use the talents of NC’s Hairstyling program through her work with Studio 55 salon in Niagara Falls.
“We try and make aware to our student body how important it is to get involved whenever they can. So when the opportunity came about to do our part to raise money for pediatric cancer research there were so many willing participants who were just as passionate about the cause,” said Weaver.
Weaver along with Hairstyling students Angelo Calango, Astrid Garcia. Sherry Manalo, Karlee Boersema, Jamie Grow and Karlene Shubert became a crucial part of the event, shaving around 15 heads, including those of NRPS Chief Bryan McCulloch, NRPS coordinator Aletta Brown and musician Joel Van Vliet. Other high-profile names to go under the razor were Regional Chair Alan Caslin and NRPS deputy chiefs Bill Fordy and Brett Flynn. Caslin, Fordy and Flynn’s heads were shaved by the cool hands of cancer patient Adam Egerter and cancer survivor Alex Luey.
“We all know someone who has been touched by this disease but one child with cancer is too many,” said Weaver. “We are so proud to have been able to do our part of such a worthwhile cause. That day we were able to raise over $12,000 and we look forward to being able to participate next year and hopefully surpass our efforts.”
