Staff and students accessing the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus via Highway 58 take note: major Thorold Tunnel repairs are scheduled to begin in mid-August.
According to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited, preliminary construction is scheduled to begin on August 17 which will run until November 14, and Hwy. 58 westbound will be reduced to a single lane during this period.
There will also be short duration single lane closures prior to the installation of a temporary concrete barrier on August 23. Temporary single lane closures will occur from Monday to Friday from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Eighteen full tunnel closures are expected as well, scheduled from August 1 to August 27 for 18 consecutive nights (excluding weekends), between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
During the full closures of Hwy 58 westbound, detour routes will be in place. A shuttle service will also be provided by Aecon to facilitate the transport of pedestrian traffic wishing to cross the tunnel.
Hwy. 58 Eastbound will be reduced to a single lane under short duration temporary single lane closures only to access the median to facilitate the construction of crossovers required for stages two and three. They will occur from Monday to Friday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The work will stop for the winter after November 14. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2020-2021.
Portable signs will be placed along Hwy. 406 to inform drivers of road closures. Detour routes will also be posted before full closures.
