As a follow-up to last year’s asbestos testing, please note that representatives from Pinchin Ltd. will conduct a reassessment at the Welland Campus from July 25 and August 8.
Pinchin – of Canada’s largest environmental, engineering and health and safety firms, and experts in asbestos containing materials – carried out testing at the Welland Campus in April and May 2017 as part of the College’s efforts to update its asbestos inventory and management plan. An annual reassessment is required, which will primarily be a visual inspection, with some additional testing – only as required.
The reassessment and possible testing will take place on the following dates and locations:
- July 25 – Mackenzie, Black Walnut, service tunnels;
- July 26 – Lundy Wing;
- July 31 – Voyageur;
- August 1 – Voyageur;
- August 7 – Merritt Wing; and
- August 8- Secord.
Please note that reassessment and/or testing does not pose any risks to the health and safety of staff and students, and will be carried out within the guidelines and requirements pertaining to handling asbestos-containing materials.
The testing that began last year was in response to the presence of asbestos in some materials used for flooring and insulation in some of the older areas of the Welland Campus – common in most buildings that were constructed prior to the 1990s. Unless they are disturbed or handled improperly, these materials do not pose any health risks to students and staff.
Last year, the College also introduced asbestos awareness training for departments that work near asbestos-containing materials as part of their duties.
Anyone with questions regarding the reassessment may contact Ralph Scholz, director, Facilities Management Services, at [email protected].
