Members of the NC community are invited to join in a special cooking demonstration at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus on the morning of June 20.
Chef Kai Zyganiuk is an internationally renowned chef and proud band member of Wasauksing First Nation, Parry Island. He will deliver a special cooking demonstration for Indigenous students participating in the Journey to Success program, a partnership between Niagara College and The Niagara Peninsula Aboriginal Area Management Board (NPAAMB).
Faculty, staff and students are invited to join in the cooking demonstration, happening in the Demonstration Lab in the CFWI at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20.
The opportunity for our Indigenous students to experience this is not only educational, but is also part of empowering our youth to consider furthering their education and truly contemplate a career in hospitality, as they can see someone from their culture/community, Chef Kai, as a strong and successful role model,” said Shanyn Porter, project manager with NC’s Workforce Development office.
Journey to Success provides a training course equipping Indigenous youth with both soft employable skills, as well as the on-the-job training they need to prepare for, get and keep jobs. The course will prepare youth for careers in a wide range of industries, with a focus on health care, hospitality and tourism. Each student who completes the course will receive a Certificate of Completion from Niagara College. Classes recently began at the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus.
The program is the culmination of nearly two years of collaboration and discussion between NPAMMB and NC’s Workforce Development and Access department about how to better equip Southern Ontario’s Indigenous youth with the skills they needed to start their career.
