Niagara College was part of a tree planting at the District School Board of Niagara’s DSBN Academy on June 5 held in recognition of World Environment Day.
The initiative was part of the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority’s 1 million trees initiative. The College participated along with the NPCA and General Motors of Canada (St. Catharines).

“Niagara College is committed to taking an active role in environmental sustainability not only on our campuses, but also in the Niagara community. We’re pleased to participate in the 1 million trees initiative, and highlight the need to conserve Niagara’s beautiful natural environment,” said Greg Medulun, vice-president of External Relations for Niagara College.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day was Beat Plastic Pollution, which encourages the use of reusable alternatives instead of single-use plastic products.
“Conserving and enhancing the Niagara Peninsula watershed is a shared responsibility. We are fortunate in Niagara to work with agencies that embrace that collective goal. One of our key strategies has been to build and develop more of these relationships, so it’s incredibly rewarding when we see our partners implement programs that reinforce environmental leadership” said NPCA Board chair Sandy Annunziata. “It’s always great to see the participating students reveal their passion and commitment to making Niagara a better place for future generations. In the global landscape, these efforts may seem small, but collectively, the impact on our planet can be dramatic”.
“In October we announced our plans to plant 1 million trees and 3 million native plants; the only way that can happen is through partnerships such as these. We encourage every resident in our watershed to get involved and to help us with this ambitious initiative,” said NPCA CAO Mark Brickell.
“GM continues to be dedicated to taking the right initiatives to protect human health, our natural resources, and local and global environments. I am pleased that our eight GM volunteers, came out to support this important event,” said Carolyne Watts, plant manager at GM St. Catharines, who was formerly chair of the NC Board of Governors (2016-2017).
