Emergency phones installed on campus

Emergency assistance is at your fingertips with new emergency phones located across Niagara College campuses.

Easily recognizable by a glowing blue light overhead, the emergency phones provide users with direct two-way communication to the College’s Campus Safety and Security control center operators. Located at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake Campuses, the new phones give the college community a direct link to college security and the police, should a situation arise where assistance is needed.

There are currently 28 emergency phones which have been placed strategically in college buildings, including the residences. All campus users – including students, faculty, staff and the public – are encouraged to activate the phones if they encounter any situation that makes them uncomfortable.

“Personal safety is a priority at Niagara College and we are pleased to offer emergency phones on our campuses for our students, staff and visitors,” said David Jastrubecki, manager of campus safety, security and parking services. “With the simple touch of a button, you will be connected with a campus security guard who will be alerted to your location and take action to provide assistance, while the blue light flashes overhead.”

New emergency phones on campus provide quick, reliable and accessible hands-free communication. All of the phones are one button, direct dial and, when the emergency call button is pushed, the blue beacon will flash overhead until the call is disconnected.

What are the emergency phones for?

The emergency phones should be used:

  • If a crime is in progress or witnessed;
  • If emergency assistance is needed;
  • If you are being harassed or feel threatened;
  • If you are ill or require medical attention;
  • To report a fire, explosion, or chemical incident; and
  • If you are waiting at a ‘safe area’ and require assistance to evacuate the building.

The emergency phones are designed to provide quick, reliable and accessible hands-free communication. All of the phones are one button, direct dial. When the emergency call button is pushed, the associated blue beacon will begin to flash and will continue until the call is disconnected.

The College’s control center operators will automatically identify the location of the phone through a code that is programmed into the system, will speak to the caller, and dispatch the necessary resources to provide assistance. Our campus security guards will respond to all activations of the phones without exception.

How to use the emergency phones

People are most effective in an emergency when they are prepared so the college community is encouraged to become familiar with where the emergency phones are located on campus.

The following format is suggested when reporting an emergency:

  • Identify the emergency;
  • Give your location;
  • Give your name;
  • Stay on the line until you are sure no further information is required;
  • Watch for the arrival of emergency personnel and direct them to the appropriate location; and
  • Take action you feel necessary to protect yourself.

These phones are not designed to take the place of 911 for those who require an immediate response from police, fire or emergency medical services.
