Message from Dan Patterson: Niagara Day, September 2

Dan PattersonI hope you will join your colleagues and me at this year’s Niagara Day on Wednesday September 2. Niagara Day is always a great way for us to reconnect as a learning community. It marks the beginning of the academic year as we prepare to welcome our new and returning students.

Niagara Day is also an opportunity to recognize our colleagues who are receiving Service Awards, the Niagara Champions Award, and College Educator Development Program certificates. A highlight, of course, is the presentation of the prestigious Awards of Excellence, which are awarded each year to an employee from each sector: support staff, faculty and administration. These are the individuals who are truly the best of the best – the individuals who support our goals and enrich college life, exemplify outstanding characteristics in terms of personal qualities, leadership, customer service, effort and work performance.

I am pleased to announce that we’ll be joined this year by Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman, the founders of Choir!Choir!Choir!  In 2011, Choir! Choir! Choir! started as an ad hoc, no-audition, no-commitment singing event and has grown into a dedicated community that meets twice-weekly and has performed at the Juno Awards, TEDx Toronto, opened for Jay Leno at Roy Thompson Hall and been featured in the Globe and Mail, Fast Company, and on NPR and CBC’s The National. They exemplify the best of creativity, collaboration and community-building. In their speeches, Nobu and Daveed talk about these themes—but they make audiences feel them, too. Packed with examples and humorous interplay, Choir! keynotes are a showcase for the collaborative process: teamwork at its most harmonious.

A great line-up of live music is also planned, including the Niagara College Band. Doors open and refreshments will be available at 7:45 a.m. in the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus gym. The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by lunch, served by Benchmark in the courtyard.

Please bring a non-perishable food item for the SAC food bank and remember to wear your name tag.

Finally, I encourage you to help us reach our sustainability goals. Please bring your refillable beverage containers for coffee and water.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 2.
