As a champion athlete, Sport Management professor Nicole Forrester knows what it’s like to win medals at the PanAmerican Games. This summer however, she is making strides off the field as as Games ambassador for TO2015 PanAm Games.
Due to her involvement with the Games, Forrester was recently interviewed for a documentary concerning women in sport, and attended a conference in Quebec City regarding this topic. The documentary will air July 15 on SportsNet (see broadcast times below).
“The film asks important questions directly related to what we are seeing at the Pan/Para Pan Am Games, in sport and in our communities,” said Forrester. “Most importantly, it explores what the future holds for girls, women, sport bodies and sport policies in Canada.”
Forrester has been the vice-chair with the Athletes’ Advisory Council for about four years. Th council involves eight other athletes from various sports including para sports. Members have been working with TO2015 to ensure the game is athlete-centred.
She says she feels honoured and takes the role very seriously to ensure the needs of athletes are understood and met. “Conversing with athletes in the village who have confirmed their enjoyment of the Games thus far, and some stating it is the best they’ve been to makes me smile broadly,” she said. “The TO2015 organizing committee has really done a wonderful job with bringing the Games to life and including the perspectives of athlete.”
Forrester, PhD., M.Ed, joined Niagara College faculty in 2012. She is an Olympian, Commonwealth Games champion and bronze medalist, silver and bronze Pan American Games medalist, and eight-time Canadian champion. Visit her website at Nicoleforrester.com.
“Nicole is a really strong leader and makes an excellent role model for our students to learn from,” said Jeff Stewart, associate dean of Hospitality and Tourism. “She often says that she ‘can’t stand the smell of mediocrity’ and you can see it in all that she does.”
Last year, Forrester was Forrester inducted to the University of Michigan Women’s Track and Field Hall of Fame.
