Events or occurrences that did not result in injury, illness or damage but had the potential to do so are called near misses. Statistics have shown that for every one critical injury or death there are more than 600 near misses. If these near misses are investigated, we can prevent more serious injuries in the future.
Niagara College employees are expected to report near misses no matter how insignificant they may seem. Near misses can be early predictors of future accidents so it is very important that they be reported. A near miss should be reported to your supervisor as soon as possible using our Incident/Accident Report form. Our Health & Safety Department will use this information to investigate and provide corrective actions to eliminate the hazard for future prevention.
Let’s all work together for a safe and healthy workplace.
