Excitement is brewing for Toronto’s Festival of Beer

The home of Canada’s first Teaching Brewery has a special place at Toronto’s Festival of Beer.

The 19th annual event, which will be held July 26 to 28 at Exhibition Place (Bandshell Park), Toronto’s Festival of Beer is a celebration of Canada’s rich brewing history hosted by experts of the brewing craft from around the world.

Representatives from Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute will be in the spotlight as part of the festival’s Brewmaster Series Pavillion. Launched last year, the Brewmaster Series Pavillion, which offers sessions with brewmasters and experts around the word, was created in partnership with the Niagara College Teaching Brewery.

On July 26, Craig Youdale and chef professor Olaf Mertens are kicking off the series at 5 p.m. with the Niagara Food and Beer Tasting Tour. A professional chef by trade, Youdale, who is the acting dean of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute, will be trading his collared shirts and ties for his chef whites that weekend, as he did last year, to participate in the festival’s Brewmaster Series.

Youdale and Mertens are also hosting a second session in the Brewmaster Series, Beer TV Dinner, where guests learn how to jazz up their TV dinner with tasty recipes inspired from flavours around the world and the College’s beer. This session will be offered July 27 at 4:30 p.m. and July 28 at 2 p.m.

NC Brewmaster John Downing will host the Brewmaster to Bottle session, leading guests on a tasting journey through the Brewmaster Series. His session will be offered on July 26 at 6 p.m.

Two graduates of Niagara College’s Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program, Jeff Broaders and Aaron Spinney, will host a grad spotlight session in the Brewmaster Series called ‘Where our Brewmasters are Now.’ This session will take place on July 28 at 6 p.m.

Current NC students will also be involved in the event, working and pouring samples from NC’s booth throughout the duration of the weekend, noted Alicia Tymoszewicz, events coordinator, Wine & Beer Operations at the College.

“These students are going into their second year of the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations program and have been working hard all summer in our production and retail store,” she said.
