Knights upset nation’s #2 team in CCAA championship action

The Welland Campus Athletic centre was at capacity as students, staff and fans cheered on the home-team Niagara College Knights.

A win on Friday night against #3 Nippissing will give the Niagara College Knights a shot at gold, after the home team dumped #2 Capilano University in a thrilling upset on Thursday night in the Ironwood Wealth Management Group CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship.

The set scores for the match were 16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8. The host Knights captured the victory in front of a near capacity crowd at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre, and nearly 11,000 viewers watched the game from home via internet stream.

At 8 p.m. tonight, the Knights will face #3 Nippissing University Lakers, with the winner earning a place in the gold medal game Saturday at 8 p.m. A loss would put the Knights in a bronze medal semi-final match on Saturday.

“This is a huge win for our men’s volleyball program, and it brings us one step closer to our goal of earning a medal at the national championship,” said Matthew Davies, manager of athletics and recreation. “Our fan support has been incredible, and we look forward to students and staff filling the bleachers and cheering us on against Nippissing.”

Admission to Championship games is $10 for adults and $5 for students at the door. A Championship pass is available for $25. The full schedule of games and results, as well as live-streaming is available online.
