Niagara College is revving up to welcome a record number of first-year students – more than 4,700, – for Orientation 2012, with a full slate of on-campus activities and the first-ever Niagara College Night to be held at the Niagara Food Festival.
“Our goal is to assist first-year students in setting themselves up for success as they begin their College journey,” said Sean Kennedy, vice-president of Student and External Relations. “We want to provide our students with all the information they need to enjoy a strong start, while creating opportunities to meet new friends, engage in the community, and enjoy the social aspects of College life.”
The College will host two weeks of Orientation events from Aug. 31 to Sept. 16, which will include a mix of social and educational activities.
On Aug. 31, as students begin moving into residences, group activities are planned to help them feel at home in Niagara.
A main event will be on Sept. 4, when first-year Orientation runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at both campuses. Students will attend program information sessions, campus tours, a carnival and a free barbecue.
On Sept. 5, when regular classes begin, new and returning students can take part in recreational activities at both campuses. A concert featuring ill Scarlett and The Balconies, presented by the Niagara College Student Administrative Council, will be held at the Welland Campus pub, The Core (doors open at 7 p.m.).
One of the biggest highlights of this year’s Orientation will be the first-ever Niagara College Night at the Niagara Food Festival on Sept. 7. As the new title sponsor of this year’s Niagara Food Festival, Niagara College will relocate its annual outdoor concert event, traditionally held at the Welland Campus during Orientation, to the food festival grounds. Niagara College Night will welcome college students and the community for free concerts featuring headliners These Kids Wear Crowns, Street Pharmacy and more. The college will offer students free shuttle bus rides to and from the event, between the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses and downtown Welland. Visit Niagarafoodfestival.com for details.
“We’re very excited to combine our major Orientation event with one of Welland’s signature community events,” said Gord Hunchak, NC’s associate vice-president, Planning and Communications. “With top-notch entertainment and delicious local food, all in a beautiful downtown setting, Niagara College Night promises to be a great way for our new and returning students to meet the community and kick off a successful year.”
This year’s Orientation also includes a greater focus on health and wellness, with Healthy Living and Financial Planning workshops, as well as Making Your Mark presentations geared to new college students.
