Land

Each campus at Niagara College has an indigenous garden where we grow native plants and sacred medicines that are used as medicines, teaching tools and conduits to the land.

The garden includes plants indigenous to Ontario such as cedar, white sage, sweet grass and tobacco which are medicines used in ceremony.

There is a deep connection between Indigenous people and the land which is why the gardens are important to our students. They have the opportunity to learn through planting, caring, and harvesting of the medicines. The Indigenous gardens are one of the ways we can help our Indigenous learners flourish and develop a greater understanding of their culture within our entire college community. It is important to provide a space outdoors where Indigenous students can go to reflect and participate in ceremonies, and it serves as a teaching tool on Indigenous culture for our students and staff. Learning from the land and connecting to it is important for all of us.

We encourage everyone to make use of the resources available, and to assist us in on-going development with your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail, phone or just come in to the office at either campus for orientation and access to services and resources. Visit our Contact and Location page for details.
