CAE webinar: T and L Conversations: Great First Day of Class

September 2, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
T&L Conversations are small, informal, and guided conversations akin to a book or journal club. Participants gather together to discuss key impressions of the focus resource and reflect on how the themes explored in the resource relate to our lived experiences as educators.
Join your NC colleagues and CAE staff in a guided conversation to discuss your insights and reflections on the following resource:
Lang, J. How to Teach a Good First Day of Class.
In this article, James Lang describes four core principles that can help shape your planning for the first day of your course, discusses logistics of a successful first day, including managing the space and technology as well as getting to know your students, shares sample lesson plans and activities for the first day, and offers suggestions for how to carry the energy from the first day of class into the rest of the term.
Please read the article before joining us for the T&L Conversation session and come prepared to discuss Professor Lang’s suggestions and some of your own approaches to facilitating an effective first day of class.
Note: To access the article, you will have to create or sign into your free account for The Chronicle of Higher Education. To create an account, you will need to input your first and last name, a valid email address, and create a password.
