Description:

This course will provide students with a brief look at the historical and theoretical perspectives of crisis and its influencing factors. Crisis across the lifespan including PTSD, age, grief, veteran issues, trauma, critical illness, substance abuse, abuse, family issues, and sexual orientation/identity issues will be reviewed. Through lecture, discussion, case studies and lab simulation, the student will explore current and historical theories around acute management of mental health along with the goals of crisis intervention. The student will learn evidence based practice and best practice guidelines that are helpful/supportive approaches to use during crisis situations. Ethics and legislation regarding crisis intervention as it relates to protecting clients, family, children and community will be discussed. A community-based framework for home crisis management and resource utilization will be analyzed.
