In this course, the student will review mental health and wellness and illness across the lifespan. The student will learn to identify, assess and discuss the dynamics, symptoms and development of mental illness as they relate to each stage of the life cycle, while focusing on the importance of early identification of symptoms, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. Using lecture, case studies and discussion, the student will focus on mental health issues that relate to pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood and late adulthood. A variety of evidence based research regarding health promotion and protection at each stage of life will be discussed. Also, a collection of existing community resources will be critically reviewed along with identification of gaps in services. You will also learn dignity-promoting strategies to manage clients' responsive behaviours during Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) certification.
