In this course, the student will review and simulate evidence based assessment skills that focus on the mental health client. The student will review the concept of health and wellness as it pertains to mental illness. Using lecture, case studies, simulation and discussion, the student will explore a variety of evidence based assessment tools with a focus on understanding issues related to age and developmental stage, diversity, culture, sexual identity, social interaction, community engagement, interpersonal relationships and functional status. Concepts such as risk assessment, stress, harm reduction and suicidality will be discussed. Assessment of support systems and community resource utilization will also be reviewed.
