This course is an introduction to materials and particularly, to the metallurgy of carbon and alloy steels. The major focus is on microstructure, and how microstructure relates to mechanical properties. This course also covers the various types of heat treatments that can be performed on steel and identifies the changes in mechanical properties that arise from these heat treatments. Students will perform activities to investigate the properties of different steels before and after heat treatment.
