You will explore the fundamentals of microbiology and toxicology and examine how small, often unseen things can affect population health and dynamics. In the microbiology section, you will practice aseptic transfer, isolation, staining, sampling and counting. You will examine slides, prepare cultures and design and conduct an experiment to assess fecal coliform contamination. Toxicology is the study of the relationship between the chemistry of a toxin, its dose, and its impact on target organs in the body. You will consider the implications for populations exposed to toxins using bioassays, case studies, and risk assessment techniques.
