You will explore the fundamentals of microbiology and toxicology and examine the impact that small and often unseen things can have on population health and dynamics. In the microbiology section you will practice aseptic transfer, isolation, staining, sampling and counting. You will examine slides, prepare cultures and design and conduct an experiment to assess fecal coliform contamination. Toxicology is the relationship between the chemistry of a toxin, its dose and its impact on the target organs in the body. You will consider the implication populations exposed to toxins through the use of bioassays, case studies and risk assessment techniques.
