This course introduces students to the principles of oral pathology and the disease processes that affect the oral and maxillofacial complex. Students examine etiology, clinical manifestations, progression, and management of common developmental, infectious, inflammatory, immune-mediated, neoplastic, traumatic, and systemic conditions with oral presentations. The course emphasizes distinguishing normal anatomical variations from pathological and anomalous conditions by recognizing and interpreting clinical signs and symptoms. Using an evidence-informed approach, students develop foundational knowledge and critical-thinking skills required to assess oral tissues, identify deviations from health, and determine appropriate documentation, monitoring, referral, and follow-up strategies within the dental hygiene scope of practice. The course explores the relationship between oral and systemic health to support comprehensive client assessment, risk identification, and client-centred care.
