This course examines the anatomy, histology, microbiology, immunology, and pathology of periodontal tissues and their role in maintaining oral health. Students explore the etiology, pathogenesis, classification, and progression of periodontal diseases, including interactions among oral biofilm, host immune and inflammatory responses, environmental influences, and systemic health factors. The course also discusses evidence-informed approaches to prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and management within client-centred dental hygiene care, including risk assessment, periodontal screening and evaluation, treatment planning, non-surgical periodontal therapy, treatment outcomes, and maintenance. Students examine periodontal therapy phases, interdisciplinary collaboration, surgical and regenerative therapies, and the impact of periodontal interventions on oral and systemic health.
