This course focuses on evidence-informed approaches to oral health promotion, disease prevention, and client-centred preventive care. Students examine biological, behavioural, environmental, and social factors that influence oral health and disease risk. Students explore the selection, indications, mechanisms, benefits, and limitations of therapeutic and cosmetic oral self-care products, including dentifrices, mouth rinses, and other preventive agents. The course emphasizes fluoride therapies, dental sealants, antimicrobial agents, and other evidence-based preventive strategies across the lifespan. Students develop skills to assess risk factors, formulate individualized preventive care recommendations, and support optimal oral health outcomes. The course introduces principles of health promotion, tobacco and nicotine cessation, and behaviour change counselling to promote informed decision-making and healthy lifestyle practices.
