This foundational course examines oral health and its relationship to overall health and well-being, focusing on the etiology, prevention, and management of oral diseases associated with dental biofilm. Students explore the principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and evidence-informed self-care interventions. The course introduces communication strategies, including motivational interviewing and client-centred coaching, to support behaviour change and improve oral health outcomes. Through case-based learning, students develop the ability to assess individual client needs and recommend appropriate mechanical, interdental, and adjunctive self-care aids based on current evidence and client preferences. The course emphasizes professional communication, critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and the development of individualized oral self-care recommendations that support lifelong oral health.
