3Description:
An apiary is the "home base" for honey bees and is an essential and vital element in commercial beekeeping operations. Healthy hives capable of growing and multiplying are a factor of many elements but the creating of an effective and ideal living environment is crucial. Students will explore the various elements that are part of a typical Apiary (beeyard) environment including the proper siting and location, accessibility and transportation corridors, proximity to food and water, and general protocols used in the cleaning and care of the structures used. Requirements for overwintering will be examined in depth and students will be able to utilize the Niagara College Apiary to demonstrate and practice all elements covered in this course. Students will be able to lead and participate in efforts involved in the extraction and packaging of honey produced by the College's honey bee hives.
