Description:

Modern art did not suddenly appear; it was a gradual metamorphosis over hundreds of years. It originated with the artists' desire to escape academic formula during a period of profound social and political upheaval and revolution. This course charts the development of modern art by examining a great diversity of works and artists. You will explore how art was affected by societal changes, which led to changes in attitudes, subject matter, expression, and the use of colour and line. This course introduces students to modern art by examining the central themes, principal artists, and significant artistic movements of the modern era.
