While the majority of job ads are legitimate, there are also fake job postings that appear real.  They are designed to gain access to your personal information or at times to endanger you or steal your money. When job searching, it is important to stay safe and use caution when applying to job postings.

Potential signs of a fake job posting:

  • Spelling and/or grammatical mistakes in the ad
  • The job requires minimal to no experience but pays very well
  • After applying, the employer asks you to deposit/transfer money with your bank account
  • You cannot locate the company’s physical address through an internet search and/or the company does not have a website, Facebook page, etc.
  • The contact person’s email address does not include the company’s name and is generic
  • Unavailable or suspicious phone number
  • Employer asks to meet you in a place other than the company’s location

Not all of the above listed signs indicate that a job posting is fake; however, if you see more than one of these signs, please proceed with caution.
