are collaborative and educational experiences that can be completed by teams throughout the college.

Before team members conduct a walk-through of their spaces, they are coached on what to look, listen and feel for to identify the nine types of energy waste. From there, the information is used to collectively determine quick wins (low cost/effort), and to explore processes, controls and solutions.

Type of waste

Examples of Opportunities

Definition

1.

Unnecessary Running or Idling

-Equipment and lights on during non-operating periods.
-Running pumps or conveyors during idle periods.

During non-operating periods, leaving equipment, motors, conveyors, lights, etc. turned on waste energy, especially during longer periods of inactivity, such as nights and weekends.

2.

Leaks

-Compressed air leaks, uninsulated steam pipes, water valve leaks, broken duct work.

When something’s leaking, there’s waste, whether it be water, steam, heat, or air (and especially compressed air!)

3.

Friction Loss

-Clogged filters, obstructed blower discharge, restricted flow due to damper settings, dirty heat and cold transfer services.

Friction cannot be eliminated, but it can be reduced. Energy waste due to friction loss happens when there are unnecessarily restrictive nozzles or filters, too many bends in a pipe, fouling on surfaces, etc.

4.

Sub-optimal Efficiency

-Replace existing equipment with higher efficiency models.
-Ensure proper installation of equipment and set to run at peak efficiency.

Sub-optimal efficiency includes poorly chosen equipment that has a clearly more efficient alternative. In less extreme cases it can also include equipment that is poorly commissioned, and equipment losing energy to wear, misalignment, or poor maintenance. Sub-optimal systems could be better, but they’re not.

5.

Malfunctions

-Broken or stuck actuators, valves, and switches.
-Malfunction/broken equipment.
-Bearing failure.
-Broken or uncalibrated sensors and gauges.

Broken and poorly-functioning equipment wastes energy. If equipment is producing excessive heat, vibration, or noise, it’s likely that there’s a malfunction as these are all forms of energy being wasted from the system, rather than working for the system.

6.

System Imbalance

-Improper set points (overrides, bypass/manual mode)
-Simultaneous heating and cooling.
-Improperly programmed controls.
-Excessive water spillage.

Systems that are not drawing the right amount of energy for the function they’re delivering are imbalanced. Some examples of imbalance include oversizing of motors and other equipment, running at a constant rate despite varying demand, and poorly configured (or permanently overridden) controls.

7.

Misapplication

-Improperly sized or ill-suited equipment.
-Compressed air used for open blowing, power tools, hand-held blowguns, vacuum generation.
-Compressed air used for personnel cooling.

Systems that have less expensive and more appropriate options available are typically wasting energy (along with money). Misapplication is using the wrong, and usually more energy-intensive, tool for the job.

8.

Underutilization

-Downtime, last minute changes, rush orders, running below peak efficiency, bottlenecks.
-Processes running below optimal capacity.

Most systems have a rate of work that makes sense for efficient and sustainable productivity. When equipment is used sporadically on account of rushed orders and scheduling changes, the disruptive flow of operations tends to reduce overall efficiency and causes energy waste.

9.

Traditional Lean Waste

-Excessive material handling and excessive scrap or rework.
-Unnecessary waiting.
-Product over-processing.

Lean operation reduces many of the examples of waste listed (left), which, in turn, saves not only time and materials, but also energy.

To schedule an energy hunt, email energy@niagaracollege.ca.

News

January 2025: Introducing the College’s Energy Team and How You can Do your Part

March 2025: Green Victory: Daniel J. Reg. 391/21) outlines a new system for resource recovery across Ontario as a part of the province’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. On April 14, 2022, the government made amendments to the regulation to clarify the process for creating the province-wide Blue Box collection system for materials that will be operated by producer responsibility organizations (or PROs) on behalf of producers.

On July 1, 2023, municipalities and First Nation communities began transitioning their Blue Box programs to the new framework, resulting in Blue Box producers becoming fully accountable and financially responsible for collecting and recycling their Blue Box materials when consumers discard them. The regulation will make producers fully accountable for their products at end-of-life and move us towards a circular economy. The Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) was established to oversee compliance with the regulation. As an institution, we have registered with the RPRA and will report our produced Blue Box material annually.

You can learn more about Ontario’s shift to an individual producer responsibility framework by visiting the Circular Economy and Blue Box Regulation pages on the RPRA website.

Why does Niagara College need to report to the RPRA?

Niagara College must report to the RPRA because we supply various blue box materials to consumers (staff, students, and community members) in Ontario and are thus considered a producer under the regulation. Our obligations as a producer are to register with the RPRA, report our annual supply data, and assume responsibility for the collection and recycling of a corresponding amount of blue box material.

Each department has been appointed a representative that is responsible for reporting a list of blue box materials supplied by that department for the calendar year to the Office of Sustainability. The Office of Sustainability then compiles and reports a comprehensive list of supply data and brand lists to submit to the RPRA.

What are Blue Box Materials?

Under the regulation, there are three types of blue box materials: product packaging, paper products, and packaging-like products which are primarily composed of glass, flexible or rigid plastic, metal, paper or a combination of these materials.

More information on blue box material categories can be found on the RPRA website.

Results

In 2023, Niagara College generated 25,941 Kg of blue box materials, which is a 24% increase in materials from 2022. Of this, 19,522 Kg, or 77% of material can be categorized as paper, making it the largest contributing category of material generated at Niagara College.

In 2024, Niagara College generated approximately 37,000 Kg of blue box materials, which is a 45% increase in materials from 2023. Approximately 83% of materials generated can be categorized as paper, making it the largest contributing category of material generated at Niagara College.

Niagara College’s Sustainability Plan 2024-2029: A Time for Action provides waste management goals and Target 8.1c sets out guidance to reduce the amount of blue box material produced by NC and sent-off site by 10% from 2023 baseline. This targeted approach enables the implementation of effective waste management strategies and promotes more sustainable consumption practices.

In an effort to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, Niagara College has been conducting a brand audit since the start of summer 2024. With a particular emphasis on certain brands and items, this thorough audit examines the types and sources of waste produced on campus. Through the identification of waste trends and contributing factors, the college intends to create focused plans for waste reduction and improved recycling operations. This targeted approach enables the implementation of effective waste management strategies and promotes more sustainable consumption practices.

What is a Brand Audit?

A brand audit is a way of sorting waste based on its brand to examine the types and sources of waste produced on campus. It helps identify the companies responsible for waste found on campus and determines if the brand is sold by on campus vendors or not.

Why do we do it?

At Niagara College, a brand audit is vital because it identifies which brands are large contributors to campus waste. This information enables the college to make more informed decisions about waste management strategies, with a focus on increasing environmentally friendly packaging and products generated and sold on campus. The audit also functions as a teaching tool, raising students’ and staff’s awareness of the environmental impact of their consumption habits. By focusing on certain brands, Niagara College can develop more effective waste reduction initiatives that better match with its sustainability goals. Materials that wind up in the improper bins are also measured by the audit, which also allows staff and students to suggest enhancements like redesigned signage, education and communication initiatives, and more.

How do we do a Brand Audit?

For conducting a brand audit, waste is collected from recycling and landfill bins present at various locations within the campus. The waste is sorted by hand based on its brand and product categories. Product categories include paper, paper packaging, rigid plastic packaging, flexible plastic packaging, metal, glass packaging, compostable packaging, and organics. After collecting the data, the parent companies of the brands are identified. Recommendations are made based on the results obtained regarding waste management strategies.

What we found!

The summer 2024 brand audit data identified Restaurant Brands International Inc. (RBI) is the parent company that was most frequently found on campus. Tim Hortons, a subsidiary of RBI and sold on campus, generated large quantity of disposable coffee and cold drink cups found during the brand audit. Encouraging the use of reusable coffee cups are among the suggestions made to lessen the waste produced by Tim Hortons customers. Depending on the activities held on campus, additional parent companies include Beavertails Canada Inc., Roark Capital, Kraft Heinz, Hormel Foods Cooperative, and Peak Rock Capital LLC were found.

How To Get Involved!

Every other week, the Office of Sustainability organizes a brand audit on campus as a teaching tool and encourages students to participate and learn about waste management at NC. To get engaged, staff and students can register on the NC Engage app or visit the sustainability office (E104 at DJP Campus) to learn more.

A brand audit has been conducted since the start of summer 2024 at the Daniel J. originated in Europe, but it is currently unknown the method of transportation, and some estimates suggest it was brought over in the 1800’s. This plant loves wet areas such as marshes and swamps, but can live anywhere there is water and soil. These invasive phragmites could be mistaken for their native cousins Phragmites Americanus, but the native phragmites species is less common and less vigorous than invasive phragmites.

Why are phragmites such an issue?

Once phragmites are introduced into an area, they will quickly begin to outcompete native plant species. Phragmites have no uses such as food, habitat, or nest materials for native organisms, so they will take over an area, pushing out native plants and the animals that rely on them. This will negatively impact the biodiversity of the area and can even create ecological “dead-zones” where nothing but phragmites live. Once they establish themselves in an area, altering soil chemistry and hydrology, they can prove very difficult and costly to remove and can return year after year they are not removed properly.

What is Niagara College doing about it?

In 2022, students in the Ecosystem Restoration program presented project proposals to Niagara College’s grounds management team in regards to possible control methods. Niagara College has since partnered with the Invasive Phragmites Control Centre to control these invaders. A variety of methods on both campuses will be used to help contain the plant on both campuses. The first method being used is what is known as the “Cut to Drown” method. An area is selected where the phragmites roots are submerged in water, and then the plants are cut as close to the base as possible. The second method is a simple clear cutting method, where all phragmites in an area are cut down using a mower or line trimmer. The last method is the application of a pesticide, glyphosate. This is done by specially trained technicians, who carefully apply the chemical by hand. Other methods such as mowing and animal grazing were considered, but were found to be less effective.

Niagara College has recently partnered with the University of Toronto on a controlled released of two moth species, as a test site for their efficacy in killing invasive phragmites

Read this InsideNC article for more information!

What can I do to help stop phragmites?

If you have phragmites on your property, the best thing you can do is contact a professional company such as the Invasive Phragmites Control Centre to have them removed. You can also help stop the spread of invasive species by encouraging local biodiversity, and cleaning off your hiking shoes prior to entering and leaving outdoor spaces. Planting native species in your garden can also help build resilience against these invaders. Patterson Campus. Every year, in the spring and fall, the turtle monitoring is conducted according to the turtle monitoring protocol. Unlike sandy beaches, the wetlands provide the ideal habitat environment for hatching. In addition to monitoring, nest protection is used to safeguard two different species of turtles that inhabit in the wetlands. Wood and chicken wire are used to construct the nests.

Turtle Monitoring Protocol

The turtle monitoring protocol can be found here

Why is it vital to monitor and protect turtles?

Due to the destruction and loss of wetlands caused by construction as well as road mortality, the two kinds of turtles located in wetlands—painted turtles and snapping turtles—are extremely threatened. The sheer number of predators, including raccoons, minks, skunks, and coyotes, also poses a threat to their existence. Additionally, snapping turtles mature later in life than other turtle species, which results in a slow rate of reproduction. For this reason, it is important to safeguard both the adults and the young.

Turtles found at the Daniel J Patterson Campus

Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata)

   Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)

The painted turtles, also known as Chrysemys picta marginata, are a species of special concern in Ontario. They can be easily identified by their special features, such as the olive-to-black upper shell with red- or orange-colored margins around the shell and red-to-yellow lines on their neck. The lower shell is of a yellow or dark tan color with some dark, specific markings on it. They usually inhabit waterbodies that have enough aquatic vegetation as well as a place where they can bask at times. They prefer to hibernate at the bottom of the waterbodies where they typically reside. It usually takes seven to 10 years for a male and 12 to 15 years for a female to reach sexual maturity. Nesting occurs from late May to early July after the female finds a suitable area with sandy or loamy soil and sun exposure.

Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina)

The largest freshwater turtle in Canada, the snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a species of major concern in Ontario. Snapping turtles, as the name suggests, have a snapping mechanism as a kind of defense since, unlike other turtle species, they are unable to retreat inside their shells to fend against attacks. Their distinctive features include a tan or olive-to-black upper shell and a long, triangular tail with spikes running over the tip. They live in freshwater bodies that have sufficient vegetation. They rarely swim; instead, they often walk on the waterbody’s bottom surface. They hibernate at the bottom of the waterbody, where they reside, but usually near the shore. It takes snapping turtles 15 to 20 years to reach sexual maturity. Female snapping turtles dig test holes at certain locations and then lay eggs at the most suitable spot during nesting, which takes place in late May or early June.

Turtle Projects at Niagara College

   Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)

Students in Niagara College’s Ecosystem Restoration program work on a number of projects in the Daniel J. Patterson Campus wetlands as part of their course work. Prior years’ work centered on the number of turtles and the application of certain concepts to turn the wetlands into a turtle-friendly habitat. According to a 2023 population count, there were about 160 painted turtles living in the wetlands. In 2021, the students built and placed the basking platforms in the waterbodies at the wetlands so that the turtles could sunbathe during that period. The summer students who worked as sustainability technicians in 2023 built the turtle nesting cages that are used to protect the turtle eggs from predators.

What should you do if you see a turtle on trail path?

It is better to leave a turtle alone if you come across one along the walk, provided that it is not in danger. While painted turtles withdraw behind their shells for protection, snapping turtles will snap if they feel threatened because they will perceive you as a potential predator. To avoid snapping, it is recommended to handle the turtles by picking them up by the sides rather than putting your hand towards their mouth. In the 1970s, the land that would later become part of the college and its surrounding wetland was used as a racetrack and wastewater lagoon due to the lack of a municipal sewer system. When the college was built in the late 1990s, the municipal sewer line was extended, making the lagoons obsolete. As part of the development, the college undertook the responsibility of restoring the lagoon, transforming it into an ecological site.

To maintain the health of this restored wetland, Niagara College implemented periodic water monitoring. Both the Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) and Welland campuses are included in this water monitoring program. The NOTL campus, in particular, is situated at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This campus includes significant ecological features such as wetlands, gardens, a vineyard, and Six Mile Creek.

Since 2012, the college has actively participated in water monitoring. However, inconsistent methods initially used made it difficult to compare data across different years. To address this, a standardized protocol was developed. This standardized approach enables the collection of long-term data, helping to identify problem areas and implement accurate remediation plans. This optimization effort aims to maximize the ecological potential of the wetlands.

Please note in the summer of 2025, the locations of the North East and Centre East monitoring sites changed slightly to accommodate access to the water. During this summer the winery effluent was removed from the water monitoring test locations due to consistent lack of access to this area or presence of water.

What we do

The water monitoring initiative at Niagara College involves collecting data from strategic points within the wetland and college drainage systems. A pH result outside this range indicates a potential chemical or biological change that could harm the ecosystem.

Temperature: The water temperature should not be too high or too low. Extreme temperatures can stress aquatic organisms and reduce overall productivity. Maintaining an optimal temperature range is crucial for the health of the ecosystem.

Dissolved Oxygen (DO): The DO levels should range between 0 mg/L and 18 mg/L. A decrease in DO can occur due to increased water temperature or higher biological oxygen demand. Adequate DO levels are essential for the survival of aquatic life.

Conductivity: High conductivity indicates a high presence of salts in the water, which can be problematic in a freshwater wetland and in water discharge. Maintaining appropriate conductivity levels helps preserve the quality of the freshwater ecosystem.

By regularly monitoring these parameters, we can detect changes or issues early and take appropriate remediation actions to ensure the continued health and stability of the wetland ecosystem.

Opportunities:

The Office of Sustainability at Niagara College invites students and volunteers to participate in the water monitoring program, offering valuable hands-on experience in water monitoring, data entry, and equipment handling. Through the use of standardized monitoring methods and data gathering, NABat seeks to offer vital information for comprehending and resolving the issues bats encounter.

Why is it vital to monitor bats?

Four of the eight species found in Ontario are seriously threatened by habitat loss and white-nose syndrome (WNS). The four endangered bat species have been detected around Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake utilizing different approaches, according to the bat monitoring report of 2023. The difficulty results from a variety of monitoring techniques usage over the years and the lack of precise collection of data that generates relevant conclusions.

What is White-nose Syndrome?

White-nose Syndrome, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans is a fungal disease that interferes with the hibernation period of bats.
