{"id":1508,"date":"2019-10-23T10:56:19","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T14:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/policies\/?page_id=1508"},"modified":"2024-01-12T15:37:56","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T20:37:56","slug":"fippa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/policies\/privacy\/fippa\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div class=\"introduction nob b l\">\r\n   Niagara College is subject to Ontario\u2019s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) which came into effect on January 1, 1988.<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This provincial legislation has two purposes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-check wp-block-list\">\n<li>to provide individuals with a right of access to certain information held by the college<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to give individuals a right of access to their own personal information while establishing standards to ensure that this information is protected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The enforcement of this Act is conducted through the office of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipc.on.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario<\/a> (IPC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FIPPA also outlines the college\u2019s obligations regarding the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and disposal of all personal information held in its custody, as well as the regulations surrounding the access of an individual to their own personal records. The College regards all personal information as confidential, and undertakes to protect the privacy of both staff and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A privacy breach is unauthorized collection, use or disclosure of someone\u2019s personal information, in contravention of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act or the Personal Health Information Protection Act.
