Overview

Internationally trained students are eligible to register for this intensive one-year program, which awards an Ontario College Graduate Certificate.

This program builds upon the foundation of mental health begun in pre-registration healthcare disciplines. It explores current issues and trends in mental health in Canada, current best practices in nursing and other health-care professions for providing optimal care to clients with diverse mental health disorders across the lifespan, legal and ethical aspects of mental health-care and the interdisciplinary approach to healthcare.

  1. Discuss the customization of mental-health care to individual clients with consideration of personally, historically,-and culturally informed attitudes about mental-health and substance-use problems.

  2. Integrate specialized knowledge of pathophysiology, psychopharmacology and contemporary interventions to plan for the provision of mental health and addictions care.

  3. Establish a therapeutic relationships with clients to develop and achieve goals.

  4. Collaborate with the inter-professional team to promote continuity of care within and across institutional, community-based and homecare settings.

  5. Engage in on-going reflection and self-directed learning to enhance self-awareness, resilience and self-care.

  6. Provide leadership, mentorship and coaching to reduce stigma and advance the quality of nursing care provided to clients with mental-health and substance-use problems.

  7. Advocate for public education, policy and legislation reform to advance mental health care and promote positive public perception.

  8. Design and adapt care plans for persons experiencing mental illness that account for their unique and evolving contexts and resources, such as personal strengths, pathology, values, and culture.

  9. Adapt and apply best practices to meet the unique needs of mental health clients using specialized, evidence-informed assessment, screening and care planning approaches.

  10. Determine therapeutic recommendations that reconcile the individual’s right to autonomy, safety and privacy with the public’s rights to safety as established in federal and provincial legislation, and employer policy and procedure.

  • If English is not your first language, proof of English proficiency may be required

Computer Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows-based desktop or laptop that meets or exceeds the following general requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop running on an updated Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 11 recommended).
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory (note that 16 GB memory is strongly recommended).
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone, and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities. A minimum download speed of 10 – 50 Mbps is recommended.

Niagara College may not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications as provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.
