More than 40 Community Integration Through Co-operative Education (CICE) alumni and dozens of staff enjoyed lunch together at The Armoury, June 28, at a special alumni reunion barbecue that doubled as a celebration of the program’s 100th graduate.<\/p>\n

It’s a significant milestone for the CICE Program<\/a>, which was first offered at NC during the 2017 winter term. The unique program combines academic and field placement opportunities for students who take core classes as well as academic experience classes, with support from learning facilitators.<\/p>\n

After completing the two-year program, they graduate with an Ontario College certificate.<\/p>\n

Twenty-eight students graduated from CICE on June 15. It was the largest cohort to date and more than four times the size of the first graduating class in 2018.<\/p>\n

Jessica Berecz, Manager, Academic Portfolio CICE, said the barbecue was a fun way for CICE alumni to network and for staff to catch up with the people who have come through the program over the last six years.<\/p>\n

“This event is important because we want to make sure our alumni still have opportunities,” Berecz said. “We want to know how they’ve been networking and (to) share with us what they’ve been up to. We want to hear what they’ve been doing and where they’re going–and we just want to see them.”<\/p>\n

NC’s CICE program is the first of its kind in the Niagara region. It’s designed to provide individuals with disabilities and other significant learning challenges the opportunity to experience college life and enhance their employability, academic and social skills.<\/p>\n

Students attend classes from various program areas throughout the College, such as culinary, horticulture, office administration, business and environment.<\/p>\n

They also complete a number of field placements during the program. At least one placement experience is on campus, such as at the libraries, the greenhouse, Benchmark restaurant or Athletic Services. Then they complete one or two off-campus placements.<\/p>\n

For Joel Chevalier, 37, who graduated from CICE in spring 2019, his off-campus placement turned into a permanent job.<\/p>\n

The Niagara Falls resident has been working at Doc Magilligan’s Restaurant and Irish Pub on Lundy’s Lane since doing his co-op placement there.<\/p>\n

“I’m a breakfast line cook and a lunch cook,” Chevalier said. “My favourite thing to cook so far is poached eggs. My dad craves my eggplant parmesan a lot.”<\/p>\n

As a CICE student, Chevalier said he became more comfortable with meeting new people which allowed him to make more friends. He also enjoyed the chance to learn different things by trying different jobs.<\/p>\n

“[The program] sets you up for a full-time or part-time job,” he said. “It helps students a lot. It builds confidence.”<\/p>\n

Sophia Kiedrowski, 26, who lives in St. Catharines, graduated in Winter 2022. She said she left the program with better communication and job-seeking skills.<\/p>\n

“I learned how to write more professional emails and I was better at interacting with others,” she said.<\/p>\n

Kiedrowski completed her work placements at The Undergrounds at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus and at the Glendale Avenue Sobeys in St. Catharines.<\/p>\n

She was also the first and only CICE student to join the Be World Ready program<\/a> and travel to England.<\/p>\n

“I was so motivated to pass this on and encourage others to do it,” she said, noting she gives talks to CICE classes about her experience. “Some of the trips are academic, but the England trip was just for pleasure. There was a lot of sight-seeing. My favourite [part] was driving through the countryside.”<\/p>\n

The trip, she said, fed her love of travel. Her goal is to one day visit Zermatt in northern Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Kiedrowski said she’s looking for work that’s the right fit for her and would love to get a job at Landmark Cinemas. In the meantime, she’s building her resume by taking additional courses, like First Aid and CPR training and a custodial course.<\/p>\n

“I’d like to find a writing class to improve my writing, too,” she said.<\/p>\n

Kathy Caicedo, 25, also chose to study more after graduating from CICE in July 2020. Following co-op placements at Benchmark restaurant and White Oaks and receiving her Ontario College certificate, Caicedo decided to apply to NC’s Hairstyling Program<\/a>. She graduated from that on June 14 and is now considering enrolling in the Dental Hygiene Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of the CICE program, Caicedo said it not only gave her a chance to get the college experience, it improved her social skills so she could interact with people with confidence.<\/p>\n

“I learned how to be more confident and more comfortable,” she said. “Then I went into hairstyling, and I didn’t think I could do it, but I did it!”<\/p>\n

CICE graduates take many different paths when they graduate, where they apply the skills they’ve enhanced while in the CICE program.<\/p>\n

Caicedo, for example, has found work at the College’s greenhouse where she helps with planting and packaging, while Zachary Randle, who was among the second CICE graduating class in 2018, works with the Niagara Falls International Marathon as a social media manager.<\/p>\n

Randle remembers his time at Niagara College fondly and was especially happy to be a part of a program that was so inclusive.<\/p>\n

“It taught me to be more outgoing (because) I wasn’t always.”<\/p>\n

Berecz said she’s received positive feedback about the alumni barbecue and hopes to have them regularly.<\/p>\n

“The alumni loved the event and are already asking when the next one will be,” she said. “It was a resounding success, as shared by both alumni and CICE staff.”<\/p>\n
