Five students from NC\u2019s Leadership Exploration and Development program took to the floor out west and lead a workshop with other student leaders from around the country, presenting in front of their peers at the Canadian Conference on Student Leadership (CCSL).<\/p>\n
The students made the trip to Vancouver, B.C. from Nov. 23-25 after all three of their proposals for the event were approved and selected by the conference\u2019s committee, having demonstrated forward-thinking leadership concepts while integrating this year\u2019s theme, Start with Why<\/em>.<\/p>\n Jenny Vu (Business \u2013 Sales & Marketing), Mindy Vegter (Honors Bach. Business Administration \u2013 HR), Chelsea Mizzi (Graphic Design), Anastasia Naleykina (Business Administration \u2013 Marketing) and Jamie Barbosa (Business Administration \u2013 HR) attended the conference, sharing their views on the topics of leadership, goal setting and how to achieve them.<\/p>\n \u201cI would highly recommend students to attend and even present at any upcoming CCSLs,\u201d said Vu. \u201cThis was my second year attending, but first year as a presenter and I can\u2019t rave enough about the strong connections I\u2019ve made with other student leaders across the country!\u201d<\/p>\n Naleykina, a second year marketing student from Russia, was excited about the opportunity to visit Vancouver for the first time and represent the college. NC was one of her first choices, noting the program and surrounding area as exceptional. She attended last year\u2019s conference and took note of the presenters who provided her inspiration.<\/p>\n \u201cI learned a lot from some of the speakers and I wanted to inspire others like they did,\u201d she said. \u201cI then set a goal for myself to present at this year\u2019s conference.\u201d<\/p>\n She spoke of the value that student engagement has in starting a career, pointing out the conference as a perfect platform for students to develop those necessary soft skills.<\/p>\n \u201cEngage, reach out to people and don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions,\u201d Naleykina added. \u201cThis year was very helpful in terms of self development and I definitely took a lot away from the presentations including my own in which I tried to follow and implement the steps I was speaking of.\u201d<\/p>\n Naleykina presented alongside Barbosa, their session titled \u201cAchieving Goals: How and Why\u201d. The two outlined various methods that would help individuals become more organized as well as how to make it easier to achieve one\u2019s goals. It also touched on how some leaders aren\u2019t necessarily chosen but become leaders due to past insight or experience.<\/p>\n \u201cThis was an invaluable learning experience,\u201d commented Barbosa, \u201cIt gives students some great insight into leadership and how to prepare for their future.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve their public speaking skills or who just want to meet future leaders,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The CCSL is a national conference bringing together student leaders from colleges and universities across the nation, incorporating exciting influential speakers and passionate student-lead seminars. Last year\u2019s event was held in the Niagara Region and was co-hosted by Niagara College and Brock University with the conference reaching record-breaking college proposals. Many NC students attended last year, sparking interest to become involved in 2017.<\/p>\n
