As President Kennedy shared last week, our successful Spring Convocation ceremonies capped off an academic year marked by change, challenge, resilience and outstanding achievement.<\/p>\n

This year marked my first Niagara College Convocation, and I was struck by how student-centred and celebratory our ceremonies are. Watching thousands of graduates cross the Convocation stage also served as an important reminder of the work that all of us do in support of our students’ success. In a year that challenged us to adapt to significant disruptions in our sector, more than 7,000 students earned Niagara College credentials – a remarkable display of student achievement. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all faculty and staff for maintaining a strong focus on students during challenging times, and for always understanding that teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do.<\/p>\n

Convocation was the culmination of an academic year in which Niagara College students continued to distinguish themselves on the national and international stage – whether it was competitions, award-winning student-made products, or our recent Skills Ontario wins. I know that behind every one of these achievements are Niagara College faculty and staff who are teaching, coaching, preparing or encouraging our students to excel. Our students’ success is your success.<\/p>\n

It was also a year in which we worked together to grow our domestic enrolments, executed quality assurance measures and program evaluations that reflect our commitment to academic quality, expanded experiential learning opportunities for students, and increased engagement with Program Advisory Committees, ensuring that our programs remain relevant, current and reflect the present and future needs of employers.<\/p>\n

As our graduates move on to their next chapter, Niagara College looks ahead to a new academic year filled with promise and opportunity.<\/p>\n

This year we will launch seven new programs that reflect emerging workforce needs: Defence Systems Engineering Technician and Technology (formerly Photonics); Cybersecurity; Addictions and Mental Health, Early Childhood Education – Resource Consulting; Professional Butchery; and Medical Esthetics. We’ll also see the return of the Event Management program, and new online delivery of our Human Resources Management program.<\/p>\n

The School of Community Services will move to the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake this fall, creating opportunities for meaningful cross-program collaboration while helping to create enrolment balance between our campuses.<\/p>\n

In the fall, I also look forward to the development of the first Niagara College Academic Plan, which will provide a roadmap for achieving teaching and learning excellence, student success and workplace responsiveness. As part of this process, we will engage leadership, faculty, students, program advisory committees and staff as we undertake college-wide cross-functional consultations. The Fall semester will also see highly concentrated effort toward preparations for the College Quality Audit Process (CQAAP), a Ministry-mandated process that ensures colleges’ quality assurance mechanisms meet established standards.<\/p>\n

Thank you once again for your contributions to a successful academic year. I wish you a restful and enjoyable summer.<\/p>\n

Register your cars by July 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From vintage classics and hot rods to tuners, 4x4s, motorcycles and electric vehicles, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/nc-car-show-2026-registration-1986331337501\">Niagara College Community Car Show<\/a> returns for its third year and will feature a diverse lineup of vehicles for every car enthusiast and curious visitor alike.<\/p>\n<p>The event at the Welland Campus on Saturday, July 4 kicks off at 10 a.m. and includes family-friendly activities – a bounce house, kids activity zone, construction vehicles courtesy of Rankin, and an ice cream truck – food vendors, and plenty of cars. The outdoor event is <em>free for spectators<\/em> and hosted in partnership with NC’s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/\">School of Trades<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/trades\/program\/motive-power-automotive\/\">Motive Power<\/a>\u00a0program, and Community Relations and Events.<\/p>\n<p>“What began three years ago as a modest idea to help promote the program has continued to grow with the support of dedicated students, staff volunteers and automotive enthusiasts from across the region,” said Pete D’Elia, coordinator of NC’s Motive Power program.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image d tb none\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/20240630_NC_Car_Show_NCC_5287.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Opening ceremonies kick off at 10:15 a.m. with awards by car class at 1:30 p.m. Prize draws and a 50\/50 raffle will raise funds for the Wayne Toth Motive Power Scholarship, named in honour of the former program coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>“The scholarship adds even deeper meaning to a day fueled by community spirit, mentorship and opportunity,” said D’Elia. “We look forward to welcome the community to Niagara College to celebrate automotive excellence and the next generation of skilled trades professionals.”<\/p>\n<p>Students and staff from the Motive Power program will offer guided tours of the automotive labs throughout the event, which runs until 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have a unique car?\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/nc-car-show-2026-registration-1986331337501\"><strong>Register\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><strong>to showcase it here by July 3 at 12 p.m. to be considered for awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"is-style-p-large\"><strong>Event details<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Location:<\/span> 100 Niagara College Boulevard in Welland.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Time:<\/span> 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Attendee parking: <\/span>Attendees can park in lots A and C. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/maps\/\">See campus maps<\/a>. As part of the agreement, Walker Industries is contributing approximately 500 cubic yards of high-performance soil, mulch and growing media annually to the College. The donation enriches campus beautification, greenhouse production and hands-on learning opportunities for students across several academic programs.<\/p>\n<p>By streamlining the College’s supply with a single, environmentally leading local partner, the initiative helps reduce the College’s\u00a0 footprint. She and her classmates have been able to work with Walker soil, mulch and growing media products in the NC Teaching Greenhouse and apply Walker’s mulch and topsoil throughout the campus gardens.<\/p>\n<p>“One of the most valuable parts of my education here at NC has been the opportunity to connect what we learn in the classroom with real-world horticultural practices,” said Rempel. “Rather than just learning about topics such as soil structure, water retention, and drainage in textbooks, we get to see these concepts in action every day. learning for high school students.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Niagara College’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncinnovation.ca\/\">Research and Innovation<\/a> (R and I) division and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/studentrecruitment\/\">Student Recruitment<\/a> team, the Innovation Mentorship Program links high school learners with local businesses and NC academic areas, giving students a taste of applied learning at the College and a preview of a campus environment.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative pairs NC courses with similar high-school courses, running class projects side-by-side with the same industry partner.<\/p>\n<p>The students visit the College for a project kick-off, which includes a comprehensive tour of the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and receive support and mentorship from NC staff and students at various check-in points during the semester. Industry partners have included Smokin’ Buddha, WildPlay Niagara Falls, Mahtay Caf\u00e9, Da Bomb Bath Co, Fonthill Family Fruit Farm, and Home2Suites by Hilton.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative has been gaining momentum since receiving NC’s President’s Award for Innovation in Student Learning and Success in 2024 and being featured at the 2025 CEWIL Conference.<\/p>\n<p>New partnerships with NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hospitalityandtourism\/\">School of Hospitality and Tourism<\/a>, Holy Cross Secondary School (St. Catharines) within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracatholic.ca\/\">Niagara Catholic District School Board<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteoaksresort.com\/\">White Oaks Resort & Spa<\/a> are providing more opportunities for students and demonstrating the demand for the program across multiple school boards.<\/p>\n<p>“White Oaks values being involved in the community. As an organization that is largely based on hospitality, tourism and events, we felt it was a great opportunity to inspire students to consider a career in hospitality by showcasing potential pathways to take,” said Alyssa Waldes, Conference Sales Manager at White Oaks Resort & Spa.<\/p>\n<p>“The Niagara Region is a hub for tourism, and especially with the new Destination Niagara Strategy plan from the provincial government, it is now as important as ever to drive interest in careers in this field,” added Waldes.<\/p>\n<p>For their project, the Holy Cross students from teacher Christopher Beatty’s Hospitality and Tourism Gr. 11\/12 class were tasked with developing the elements of a potential conference for White Oaks within a set budget. From concept and logistics to agenda and menu items, the students flexed their planning and creative skills to come up with a professional plan for one of Niagara’s most renowned hospitality destinations.<\/p>\n<p>“Programs such as this create valuable opportunities for students to develop presentation, leadership, and creative skills. The panelists applauded the students for their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>“The high school participants in the Innovation Mentorship Program demonstrated to me that they are ready for the rigors of post-secondary study, and I was very impressed by the high quality of the presentations,” said Weaver.<\/p>\n<p>Waldes was also impressed. She enjoyed hearing the perceptions, ideas and thought processes of all finalist groups. It was overwhelming at first, but once we got working on the project, we really enjoyed it,” said Micallef.<\/p>\n<p>“This was real, industry experience, and it was the most educational assignment we’ve had. The visits brought together College leadership, organizational partners and alumni working across both organizations, highlighting the important role NC graduates play in supporting communities throughout Niagara.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Niagara Region<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At Niagara Region headquarters, NC’s executive leadership team joined Niagara Region’s senior management team to discuss current collaborations and future opportunities. Conversations focused on shared priorities including healthcare workforce development, economic development, public health, research and innovation, student pathways, and strategies to help address evolving labour market needs across the region. The visit offered an opportunity to learn more about the clinic’s role in supporting community health through dental screenings, preventive care and oral health education.<\/p>\n<p>The employer event concluded with an alumni social gathering that brought together over 150 NC alumni employed by Niagara Region, along with Niagara Region employees and NC representatives. Alumni, employees and NC representatives joined to connect over coffee and baked goods, celebrate their accomplishments and learn more about collaborative projects making a difference across Niagara. Among them was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/05\/04\/robotic-companions-real-connection-ncs-fins-feathers-and-fur-project-takes-flight\/\">Fins, Feathers and Fur project<\/a>, led by NC’s Healthy Aging and Wellness Innovation Centre (HAWIC), which explores the use of therapeutic robotic animals to support individuals living with dementia living in long-term care. Attendees also experienced an innovative technology demonstration highlighting tools designed to improve documentation, enhance care delivery and strengthen engagement between residents, caregivers and families. The projects highlighted the impact of student-community partnerships, providing NC students with valuable hands-on learning experiences while enhancing wellness and quality of life for seniors in the Region.<\/p>\n<p>NC President Sean Kennedy also addressed the group, describing the gathering as feeling like a family reunion and reflecting on the many ways NC alumni contribute to communities and workplaces across the region.<\/p>\n<p>“We’ve always known how integral Niagara College is to all aspects of life in Niagara,” said Kennedy. “You cannot turn around without running into a proud NC proud of the impact we have in supporting our communities and it’s so aligned with everything the Region does,” he said. “We’re always thinking about how we can expand programming and develop new programming to strengthen Niagara and our communities.”<\/p>\n<p>Looking around the room filled with several NC alumni, President Kennedy noted that the graduates in attendance reflected the wide range of programs and career paths supported by NC.<\/p>\n<p>“This is an amazing gathering,” said Kennedy. “The range of grads in this room reflects the incredible breadth of what we do at Niagara Industries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the afternoon, NC leadership visited Walker Industries, a long-standing college partner with deep roots in Niagara. The visit included a tour of parts of the company’s 1,200-acre landfill and resource recovery facility, led by Walker Industries Environmental Division Vice-President Mike Deprez, providing an overview of the organization’s operations, environmental systems and sustainability initiatives. The visit highlighted the many ways this partnership continues to connect students with real-world experiences while advancing innovation, environmental stewardship and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting ended with an alumni social gathering where NC graduates employed throughout Walker Industries gathered with NC leaders and colleagues to celebrate their shared connection to the College. Over coffee and baked goods provided by NC alumni-owned businesses (Wandering Spirits and Niagara Food Company), attendees connected with fellow graduates, shared experiences and celebrated the impact of NC alumni throughout the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming attendees, Lisa Benger, who recently joined the College’s Board of Governors, reflected on the strong presence of NC graduates throughout the organization.<\/p>\n<p>“This is an opportunity to get together, connect and celebrate our achievements as graduates,” said Benger.
