Niagara College employees are invited to get moving for a good cause this fall with the Step Challenge, a fundraising initiative supporting the 2026 NC Cares in a United Way workplace campaign.<\/p>\n

Running from October 26 to November 1, the week-long challenge encourages employees to move, challenge their colleagues and see who can get the most steps, all while supporting individuals and families in need across Niagara.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s a friendly rivalry between colleagues or a personal goal to reach a new step count, employees are encouraged to put their best foot forward and get involved.<\/p>\n

Employees can register for the individual challenge from October 12 to 20, with a $10 registration cost supporting the workplace campaign. The participant who records the highest number of steps during the challenge will receive a prize valued at $100, To register, click <\/strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following registration and payment, participants will receive an email from the NC Cares campaign co-chairs with a link to join<\/strong> the NC Cares Step Challenge team ahead of the October 26 start date.<\/p>\n

Participants will track their steps using the free StepUp Pedometer Step Counter app, available through the Apple App Store<\/a> and Google Play<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the challenge takes place during Fall Break Week, employees can participate from any location, including while away from the college or on vacation.<\/p>\n

The NC Cares campaign co-chairs will contact the winner by email on November 3.<\/p>\n

Supporting the Niagara community<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Step Challenge is one of the fundraising initiatives supporting the NC Cares in a United Way workplace campaign, in support of United Way Golden Horseshoe and its network of local agencies and community programs.<\/p>\n

Funds raised through the campaign help support individuals and families across Niagara by contributing to programs and services that address critical community needs, including poverty, food insecurity, mental health and social isolation.<\/p>\n

Evening on the Dean’s List: Sip, savour and celebrate NC Teaching Winery’s finest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niagara College is ready to shine a spotlight on the finest wines in the history of Canada’s first Teaching Winery with a unique dinner event this fall.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, November 19, the College will host <strong>An Evening on the Dean’s List<\/strong>. The ticketed dinner event, to be held at Benchmark Restaurant, will shine a spotlight on a roster of select NC wines that were hand-picked as the “best of the best” premium vintages from the Teaching Winery since its inception more than 25 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Craig Youdale, Dean of Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies, gathered a team of College winemakers and expert faculty from the School of Wine, Beer and Spirits to sample the Teaching Winery’s collection of Dean’s List wines for a mass tasting before nine Dean’s List wines were ultimately selected: 2019 Blanc de Blancs, 2019 Blanc de Noirs, 2022 Viognier, 2019 Chardonnay, 2019 Pinot Noir, 2022 Riesling, 2022 Cabernet Franc, 2017 President’s Red and 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortified.<\/p>\n<p>The final wine list inspired a custom menu, which was curated by the dean himself to ensure each chosen wine would be poured alongside a perfectly paired dish.<\/p>\n<p>“Usually, we select wines to complement the menu for our dinner events, but on Nov.19, our wines will be the star of the show,” said Youdale. “My key role is to make sure that the food we produce allows the wines to shine and showcase their best qualities for our guests.”<\/p>\n<p>The event will offer a highly educational comparative tasting of the Teaching Winery’s history. Guests will explore the 2019 vintage by tasting Chardonnay and a bronze-medal-winning (National Wine Awards) Pinot Noir as both sparkling and still wines – a rare, side-by-side comparison that highlights the versatility of Niagara wine and the impact of critical winemaking decisions.<\/p>\n<p>“People are in for a sensorial treat as well as some surprises,” said Allison Findlay, Head Winemaker at the NC Teaching Winery, who graduated from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/winery-viticulture-technician\/\">Winery and Viticulture Technician<\/a> program in 2014. “We have been making exceptional wines since the day we launched the program and we are excited to tell the story of our 25 years through these bottles. They show growth, education, innovation, and quality.”<\/p>\n<p>The event will feature the first ever crops from NC’s estate vineyard, along with a 2022 Viognier, a gold-medal winning (National Wine Awards) 2022 Riesling, and a 2022 Cabernet Franc, which recently earned a prestigious platinum medal (National Wine Awards).<\/p>\n<p>The vintages hold a personal connection for Gavin Robertson, Professor and Coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/winebeerspirits\/program\/winery-viticulture-technician\/\">Winery and Viticulture Technician<\/a> program. Robertson began working at the Teaching Winery as a student in the program in 2010 and served as Head Winemaker from 2014-2021.<\/p>\n<p>“We don’t often get an opportunity to put this many wines from the Teaching Winery’s history on the table at once and taste them comparatively,” said Robertson. “Wines such as the 2017 President’s Red, allow us to show what can happen when quality Niagara fruit, thoughtful winemaking and time come together. These wines provide a great snapshot of what our approach to wine education has produced over time.”<\/p>\n<p>The selected 2019 sparkling wines have earned prestigious accolades, including two gold medals for the Blanc de Blancs (Decanter World Wine Awards and National Wine Awards), and a double gold (Ontario Wine Awards) for the Blanc de Noirs.<\/p>\n<p>“Over the past 25 years, the Teaching Winery has been a place where students have learned by working with real equipment and real production decisions,” said Robertson. “The legacy we are celebrating isn’t only a collection of wines; it’s also the people who learned through making them and then carried that knowledge and experience into the evolving Canadian wine industry.”<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held at NC’s Benchmark Restaurant – where the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders gain real-world hands-on experience at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake – supported by the Benchmark team led by Victor Oliviera and Chef Justin Downes.<\/p>\n<p>The signature dinner event will also put experiential learning into action for culinary and hospitality students, who gain the experience and expertise they need to succeed in the industry at a high-pressure, real-world dinner event.<\/p>\n<p>Youdale noted that An Evening on the Dean’s List is a prime example of what makes NC’s Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies division so unique.<\/p>\n<p>“Our students aren’t just learning in classrooms; they’re making world-class wines alongside our expert, award-winning winemakers, and delivering world-class culinary and hospitality excellence in real-world settings,” he said. “This event will be a true celebration of their work.”<\/p>\n<p>A limited number of tickets are on sale for the Nov.19 event (reception at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:45 p.m.). With more than 20 years of experience in the Ontario college system, she is dedicated to advancing Indigenous self-determination and creating safer, more inclusive learning spaces for all students.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Living Library series, the conversation will offer an honest reflection on Hogan’s journey as an Indigenous leader in post-secondary education over the past two decades. She will share her experiences and the evolving realities of decolonization and Indigenization in practice, while reflecting on her recent work helping to shape NC’s new Indigenous Education Strategy<\/p>\n<p>The discussion will also explore how the strategy connects to her experiences and vision for Indigenous Education at NC, what continues to motivate her in this work and her hopes for the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Living Library event series contributes to the wholistic experience of Niagara College and the wider community by offering opportunities to engage with the lived experiences of equity-deserving communities. The LLC team – at times in partnership with Indigenous Education – creates respectful spaces for individuals from varied backgrounds to connect through open dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Through these conversations, the series aims to challenge misunderstanding, encourage reflection and provide educational opportunities that contribute to building a vibrant and inclusive society.<\/p>\n<p>Those registered for the event are able to submit questions to Leah in advance via the NC Engage app.<\/p>\n<p>Watch parties will be held in both IE lounges for the NC community to view the Living Library individuals and families navigate trauma, adversity and mental health challenges, while working to break down barriers to specialized mental health care.<\/p>\n<p>As the Founder and Executive Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/attchniagara.com\/\">Attachment and Trauma Treatment Centre for Healing (ATTCH) Niagara<\/a>, Gill leads a non-profit organization providing free and low-cost trauma-specialized therapy to individuals who may face barriers to accessing care.<\/p>\n<p>Her commitment to supporting the well-being of others goes beyond her clinical practice. An award-winning clinician, educator and internationally recognized trainer, Gill is helping prepare the next generation of mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care.<\/p>\n<p>Her career has come full circle as a four-time NC graduate, who has returned to the College as a part-time professor to share her expertise with students preparing to enter the field.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Building a foundation at NC<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Originally from Prince Edward Island, Gill first moved to Niagara with her now-spouse. As an international speaker and trainer, Gill shares her expertise with clinicians, first responders, medical students and other professionals, helping strengthen trauma-informed approaches across sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years, she has also supported efforts to build trauma-informed emergency preparedness and response capacity across Ontario through a provincially funded initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, she created a workbook designed to help children understand the impacts of trauma and work through overwhelming experiences in a safe and playful way.<\/p>\n<p>Gill credits her passion for lifelong learning that started during her time at NC, with inspiring her to explore new approaches to trauma treatment.<\/p>\n<p>“My love for learning – which truly ignited during my time at Niagara College – drove me to complete extensive training and research,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing gaps in access to specialized trauma care, Gill developed her treatment model to turn complex research into practical approaches that professionals can use to support individuals on their healing journeys.<\/p>\n<p>Her contributions have earned recognition locally and nationally, including the 2025 Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) Humanitarian Award and the 2024 Women in Business Excellence in the Not-for-Profit Sector Award. Niagara College student Celia Taylor, understanding how she learns has changed more than her experience in the classroom, it has changed what she believes is possible.<\/p>\n<p>A lifelong learner and alumna of NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/law-clerk\/\">Law Clerk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/business\/\">Business<\/a> programs, Taylor returned to school in her 60s to pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/business\/program\/human-resources-management\/\">Human Resources Management<\/a>. While she was excited to continue her education, she was also hesitant, having found school challenging in the past.<\/p>\n<p>At 63, with support from NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/hwas\/services\/accessibility\/\">Student Accessibility Services<\/a> team, Taylor was diagnosed with attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, organization and executive functioning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1689949\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1689949\" class=\" wp-image-1689949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-240x300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-240x300.webp 240w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-288x360.webp 288w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-180x225.webp 180w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-108x135.webp 108w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor-432x540.webp 432w, https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/10\/Celia-Taylor.webp 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1689949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NC student Celia Taylor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>“Before my diagnosis, I struggled to focus, and I often felt like those challenges meant I wasn’t capable,” said Taylor. “Having the support of everyone at Niagara College, from helping me receive my diagnosis to learning how to navigate the world with severe ADHD, has been life-changing.”<\/p>\n<p>Taylor says having the right supports in place – including note-taking, test accommodations and guidance from a learning strategist – has helped improve her marks, but the impact has gone beyond academics. Learning about her disability and how to work with it has helped her approach barriers faced differently and given her the confidence to pursue opportunities beyond the classroom, including running for city council in Niagara Falls.<\/p>\n<p>“Niagara College has given me the tools to succeed and I’m so grateful. It’s changed my life,” she said.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor’s experience reflects the importance of creating learning environments where students can access the support they need to participate fully in their education.<\/p>\n<p>At NC, Accessibility Consultants work with students with disabilities to identify accommodations that provide equitable access to education. Supports are tailored to each student’s individual needs and may include guidance with documentation and assessments, alternative format textbooks, in-class academic accommodation and more.<\/p>\n<p>Students may connect with Accessibility Services at different points in their journey. Some may have an established diagnosis and know what accommodations they need, while others, like Taylor, may be seeking answers or learning more about themselves for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Wiley, an Educational Developer with NC’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/cae\/\">Centre for Academic Excellence<\/a>, specializes in accessibility and inclusion. She works to build awareness of disability through a social model, which recognizes that barriers in environments, systems and attitudes can create challenges for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>“We often talk about students overcoming barriers, instead of being willing to ask why the barriers existed in the first place,” said Wiley. “For me, accessibility is not about making sure that a student can get through the door or access a course. Instead, it is about changing the questions we typically used to ask about how we can help a student fit into the box of how things have always been done and instead asking how we can change the environment to help students have real opportunities for success. When we can design learning environments, policies, and practices with diverse ways of being and thinking in mind, we give students genuine opportunities to participate and to thrive in environments that previously excluded them.”<\/p>\n<p>Creating an accessible learning environment also means recognizing that there is no single experience of disability. Students have different needs, may access support at different points in their education and may choose whether or not to disclose a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Accessing support has helped Taylor move beyond seeing the challenges she experienced throughout her life as personal shortcomings. It has also helped her see new possibilities for herself.<\/p>\n<p>Now an advocate for accessibility and inclusion, she hopes sharing her experience will encourage others to learn more about disability and consider how they can create more inclusive environments.<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/2026\/09\/29\/nc-recognizes-disability-awareness-week-oct-5-9\/\">Disability Awareness Week<\/a>, the NC community is encouraged to learn more about disabilities, accessibility and the lived experiences of people with disabilities, and consider how we can create more inclusive spaces for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor recognizes that not every student wants to talk openly about their disability, and no one should feel obligated to disclose it. But she wants students to know that support is available if they choose to access it.<\/p>\n<p>Her advice is simple: ask for help when you need it, explore the resources available and don’t let a disability define what you believe you can accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>“Tap into everything Niagara College is offering you as a student with a disability,” she said. “You will become more focused, stronger and more empowered, and realize that you are capable of doing anything.
