game innovation on April 7.<\/p>\n<p>Four Niagara College student teams earned five awards at Level Up, an annual event featuring 160 post-secondary teams from across Ontario competing for 18 awards while showcasing their work, connecting with industry professionals, receiving live feedback, and competing for top honours.<\/p>\n<p>Student teams included participants from Niagara College and Brock University&#8217;s joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/ba-arts-game-design\/\">Honours BA in Game Design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/bsc-game-programming\/\">Honours BSc in Game Programming<\/a>, as well as Niagara College&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/game-development\/\">Game Development<\/a> diploma programs.<\/p>\n<p>The event drew thousands to the Sheraton Toronto Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Niagara College is proud of the outstanding achievements of our students and faculty in a province-wide competition that highlights some of the strongest work by emerging game developers,&#8221; said Michelle Giroux, Associate Dean of NC&#8217;s School of Media Studies. &#8220;Their success reflects the calibre of talent, innovation, and technical skill within our To see how universally loved their games appeared to be across the showcase, in front of thousands of people made it really special. We learned a lot of stuff like math and physics at Brock, and a lot of application like game design aspects and thought processes at NC. Tying the two together made for an awesome experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shotunde said that the interpersonal skills he developed made Level Up and other experiential opportunities even more meaningful and impactful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it pays a lot to be authentic and genuine,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You don&#8217;t want to step on anyone&#8217;s toes, but to be able to move around, get to know people, play their games and be friendly with everyone was great. Connecting with them on that personal level is always cool and creates a great environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>DisGo<\/em><\/strong> (joint NC-Brock programs)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Third place, People&#8217;s Choice<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>DisGo<\/em>, available on <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/4309240\/DisGo\/\">Steam<\/a>, pits four friends against each other in a split-screen battle for the spotlight. This was eight months of hard work,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The process of ensuring accessibility for all was made easier by our team&#8217;s cohesion. We needed to check what we could do in-house and then decide how to use that to create that accessibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Saylor, who served as the team&#8217;s accessibility designer, said titles such as Call of Duty and The Last of Us influenced their approach to accessibility in gameplay. She explained that the team&#8217;s work included designing the HUD (heads-up display), developing a font guide, and creating an accessible typeface with thicker, more legible lines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accessibility shouldn&#8217;t be an afterthought; it should always be important,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Design is a conversation that everyone can join in on. points to steady hiring of recent NC graduates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This spring, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/technology\/program\/mechanical-engineering-technology\/\">Mechanical Engineering Technology (Co-op)<\/a> program students at Niagara College saw firsthand that local opportunities in advanced manufacturing remains strong, even amid global uncertainty, during recent tours of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innio.com\/en\/\">INNIO<\/a>, a leading energy solutions company operating in Welland at full capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Two groups &#8211; students in years one and three &#8211; visited the facility on March 11 and 18, guided by part-time professor Sukant Chatterjee, who also works there as a Machining Operations Leader. Chatterjee teaches Advanced Metrology, among other courses, and used the tour to connect course concepts with real-world applications.<\/p>\n<p>Professors Joseph Otta and Neil Walker joined students as they observed how engines are built during an assembly tour that included testing and painting operations.<\/p>\n<p>In the machine shop, students saw advanced equipment in action, including a gantry coordinate measuring machine (CMM) with a REVO head, CNC mill-turn and grinding processes, crankshaft and crankcase machining, and a large multi-head CNC milling machine with line-bore systems.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the operation stood out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sukant highlighted a very large gantry CMM, likely among the largest in the world, and the facility&#8217;s increasing capacity with recent equipment investments,&#8221; said Otta. &#8220;We also witnessed the first engine block being machined on a newly commissioned $5 million CNC machine from Japan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Students were equally engaged by the people behind the work, including peers on co-op and NC alum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Year One students were particularly excited to see our program graduates and co-op students working there,&#8221; Otta said. A current junior co-op student also helped guide the tour and shared their experience.<\/p>\n<p>The visit reinforced strong demand for skilled graduates. INNIO&#8217;s machine shop employs 90 technicians across three shifts and continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Last year we hired 10 students from the college, and this year we have already hired two,&#8221; said Chatterjee. &#8220;We are growing quickly to meet demand while maintaining safety, quality, and delivery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Mechanical Engineering programs at NC are designed to prepare students for this demand, requiring them to complete two co-op work terms that provide direct industry experience before graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The tour reinforced the value of hands-on skills that remain difficult to automate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are durable competencies that are highly resistant to AI,&#8221; said Otta, noting areas such as precision machining and advanced metrology. &#8220;They position our graduates very well for long-term career stability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite broader challenges tied to tariffs and supply chains, INNIO has remained resilient through diversification and is continuing to expand capacity.<\/p>\n<p>For NC students, the experience connected classroom learning with real-world impact and highlighted clear pathways into a thriving industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NC Professor Sukant Chatterjee and Machining Operation Leader at INNIO points to steady hiring of recent NC graduates. what&#8217;s next. For Debendra Lamichhane, he has also been thinking about what he will leave behind: experiences that bring students together and encourage them to grow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to create the kind of event I would have loved to participate in as a student&#8230; where students could challenge themselves and connect with like-minded peers,&#8221; said Lamichhane, a student from Nepal in their final term of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/media\/program\/programming\/\">Computer Programming.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1597520 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/winners.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lamichhane modelled the event in the style of competitive programming contests which are designed to test students&#8217; algorithmic thinking. Participants &#8211; 16 in total &#8211; worked through a range of problems within a fixed time, with rankings based on difficulty solved, speed of submission, and code efficiency. The challenge: to reach a solution and refine it into the most efficient form possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What stood out the most was the impact on students,&#8221; said Lamichhane. &#8220;It brought out many skilled coders who hadn&#8217;t had a chance to showcase their abilities before. More importantly, beginners stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something new, and many participants asked for more events like this in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Students were fully engaged and energetic, motivated by the chance to test their skills and compete for prizes including a portable monitor, mechanical keyboard, gift cards, and movie tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Lamichhane explains how the experience links to their NC program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It applies core concepts like problem solving, efficiency, and algorithm design,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Debendra and the students put on an excellent event which helped to build community in our program,&#8221; said Melissa VanderLely, Program Coordinator of Computer Programming and Analysis. &#8220;We hope to continue with coding events in future years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1597521 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/insidenc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2026\/04\/jcoders.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once they cross the Convocation stage this June, Lamichhane looks forward to a career in software development, focused on the inner workings of computers and how systems operate at a deeper level. of creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. Campers from La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 Soleil, a March Break camp based in Welland, were invited to campus to take part in an interactive experience led by students in NC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/communityservices\/program\/recreation-therapy\/\">Recreation Therapy program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its second year, the partnership between Niagara College and La Bo\u00eete \u00e0 Soleil continues to create meaningful opportunities for both campers and students. The day featured outdoor play, creative and sensory-based experiences, and innovative technology-driven stations. The course takes an applied approach to building students&#8217; skills in planning, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation services, with a focus on inclusion and adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>For Recreation Therapy student Karsyn Venus, the experience highlighted the real-world impact of her studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Experiences like the March Break camp give our class the chance to put what we&#8217;ve learned in the classroom into practice,&#8221; she shared. &#8220;It was an opportunity to build confidence in our skills and see firsthand how meaningful, engaging activities can make a difference.
